Foxy Names Stikins Name Tags

Today’s date, the 13th October, has a number of fascinating features that you might not know about; for example, this particular date doesn’t exist in the year 1582 (in Italy, Poland, Portugal, and Spain anyway) due to the adoption of the Gregorian calendar AND it is also International Skeptics Day (unless you believe the skeptics who say that 13th January is actually Skeptics Day!). More importantly though, it is also the birthday of the fictional character Special Agent Fox Mulder, which got us taking a closer look at words and names associated with foxes!

Foxes around the world…

Foxes feature in myths, legends, and folklore from all around the world; they are commonly associated with magical transformations and often appear as tricksters, magical familiars, or anthropomorphic creatures. In Western folklore, foxes tend to be associated with cunning and trickery (perhaps a reflection of their ability to “outfox” hunters and farmers attempting to protect their livestock OR a reflection of the association made between foxes and evil during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, when foxes were burned as symbols of the Devil). Other folklore depicts foxes as spirits with magic powers (used for making mischief or for more malicious purposes) or even as mystical and sacred creatures (that are either good omens that bring wonder or bad omens that bring ruin).

One of the most famous examples is “Reynard the Fox”, an anthropomorphic red fox and trickster figure, who featured as the main character in a cycle of European fables, including Dutch, English, German, and French tales. The success of these fables was such that the name of the central character was adopted into the French language as the standard word for “fox” (replacing the Old French “goupil”).

Names inspired by Foxes

Working in the name labels industry, we encounter a range of different names daily. To celebrate fabulous foxes everywhere, we’ve put together a list of names that have their origins in different words for “fox” or in stories that feature foxes:

  • Fox: an English name that developed either from the word “fox” itself or from the surname “Fox” (itself traditionally given as a nickname to individuals who exhibited fox-like cunning).
  • Tod/Todd: another English name that developed from a surname; the surname “Todd” comes from the Middle English word for fox – todde.
  • Reynard/Renard: Reynard is an English name derived from the Germanic name “Raginhard” (made up of the German elements ragin meaning “advice” and hard meaning “brave/hardy”); the name was used for the medieval character “Reynard the Fox” and the French version (Renard) has become both a French name and the French word for “fox”.

In fact, while female foxes are known as “vixens”, male foxes are commonly known as “dogs”, “tods”, or “reynards”, and the names Reynard/Renard and Tod/Todd are commonly used for fictional characters that are either actual foxes or that have fox-like characteristics.

Other names inspired by these fabulous creatures include:

  • Balgair/Balgaire – Scottish, m
  • Crevan – Irish, m
  • Devoss – Dutch, m
  • Refr – Icelandic, m
  • Rennard – German, m
  • Ræf – Danish, m
  • Sinopa – Native American, f
  • Tokala – Native American, f
  • Vixen – English, f

Autumn - Stikins Names Tags

Tonight, at 21:02, the Autumn Equinox will take place, traditionally signalling the transition from summer to autumn. “Equinox” comes from the Latin word “aequinoctium”, which is made up of “aequus” (meaning equal) and “nox” (from “noctis” meaning night) – there are TWO equinoxes each year, which mark the moments at which the sun is directly above the equator making night and day (roughly) equal in length.

The two equinoxes occur each year in March and September and they are known by a variety of names including:

  • The vernal equinox and autumnal equinox (the Latin words for spring and autumn)
  • The March equinox and September equinox (indicating the months during which the equinoxes take place)
  • The northward equinox and southward equinox (indicating the direction of the sun’s movement across the equatorial line – in March this is south to north and in September it is north to south)
  • The First Point Of Aries and the First Point Of Libra (derived from the constellations that the sun appears to be in front of at the moment of the equinox – confusingly, due to the very gradual change in the orientation of Earth’s axis of rotation (the line from the north pole to the south pole) these constellations are actually currently Pisces and Virgo).

The autumn equinox has traditionally been used as a symbol of the change from summer to autumn (in the northern hemisphere; in the southern hemisphere it marks the passage from winter to spring) and is often used as a traditional time for harvest festivals around the world.

Name Labels Inspired by the Seasons…

Given that today marks a change in season, we thought we’d take a look at how the four seasons fair amongst our customers as names with a seasonal flavour! Autumn is actually the second most popular season amongst Stikins ® customers with Summer being the most popular and Winter taking third place – sadly, none of our customers (so far) have requested name labels printed with Spring.

With the shift into autumn, children across the country will be settling into the first term of the school year and gathering an ever impressive array of paraphernalia to carry around with them – including winter warmers, once the weather takes another cooler turn. Our Stikins ® name labels can be used to label all kinds of clothing and personal items, including hats and gloves, coats and scarves, and shoes for the autumn and winter months.

BIG NEWS: introducing the new STIKINS ® NAME LABEL KIT – the most versatile, multipurpose name label pack – ever!

Thursday, April 27th, 2017

Yes, the big day is here and we are delighted to announce the launch of a brand new version of our Stikins ® name labels in the shape of the Stikins ® Name Label Kit.

This kit contains 60 blank Stikins ® name labels and a pen, which means that you can personalise each and every name label exactly as you want – allowing you to split your pack however you need between as many different family members as you like.

The name labels in each kit are made with exactly the same material and unique adhesive as our printed Stikins ®; the ONLY difference is they have a matt finish to allow your written names or messages to stay in place – even after you wash your labelled items.

These easy to use name labels simply stick in and stay in, so there’s no sewing and no ironing required. You simply write on the name or message you want with the pen provided, peel the name label off its backing sheet, and stick it onto your item – and you’re done! Stikins ® can be used to label clothing and fabric items, along with other personal items that you want to keep safe, including shoes and bags, lunch boxes and water bottles, books and stationery kits, and digital devices.

Stikins ® should be applied onto the wash-care label of clothing and fabric items and can be applied directly onto personal items. In shoes, they should be applied under the tongue of the shoe or onto the side wall; they should not be applied to the floor of the shoe where they would lie beneath the foot as this will cause the print to disintegrate over time.

The Stikins ® Name Label Kit costs £10 and can be ordered online, by phone, or by post. To order online, simply visit the Buy Stikins ® page and select the Stikins ® Name Label Kit.

We’ve been working on this new product for months and we’re delighted that we finally get to share it with all of our customers – we hope you love it as much as we do.

Head on over to the Stikins ® Page now to place an order for your very own Stikins ® Name Label Kit today.

Tips About Text – Name Label FAQs About Fonts, Names, & Special Characters

Monday, November 14th, 2016

If you’ve never ordered name labels before you might be a bit confused about what information you should request on your name labels. This blog post should give you a bit of helpful advice to make sure that your name labels have the perfect print for you!

As a personalised product, it is ultimately up to you to decide what text you want to include on your name labels BUT there are a few things to think about to make sure that your name labels are as effective as possible.

All of our name labels are printed with a bold, black font; we do not offer any other font colours or styles.

The font size is determined by how many characters you request on your labels. Our name labels measure 30mm wide by 15mm high (Stikins ®) or 35mm wide by 15mm (Trons ®) only – they DO NOT GET BIGGER OR LONGER to allow your text to fit. Instead, our system will count up the number of characters you have requested on each line and then REDUCE the font size until it is small enough to allow all of those characters to fit onto your name labels.

To get a bigger font size, therefore, you should keep your information short and sweet. You CAN request up to 30-35 characters per line but we would advise using no more than 20. Most of our customers request a name only, although you can comfortably fit a name (first name and surname) on the top line and a phone number on the bottom line. If you want the largest font size possible, you would need to use a single name only (e.g. just a surname).

We DO NOT recommend including addresses or email addresses (as these tend to use up a LOT of characters), or trying to include more than TWO bits of information on your name labels.

Our name labels can ONLY be printed with standard alphanumeric characters (A-Z and 0-9); we cannot print any images or emojis – although we can print emoticons made out of standard characters and punctuation marks (^__^).

We can also print the following accented characters from the standard European keyboard:
À Á Â Ä Ã Å Æ à á â ä â å æ È É Ê Ë è é ê ë Í Î Ï ì í î ï Ô Ö Õ ò ó ô ö õ Ù Ú Û Ü ù ú û ü Ç ç Ñ ñ Ý Ÿ ý ÿ Ø ø Ð ð ß ƒ

When you order name labels from us, you will be asked if you want your text on one line or two lines. The default option is TWO LINES and we recommend leaving this option selected unless you are entering a short amount of information only. For example, if you are using a single name (e.g. surname only) or want labels printed with a single word then you could choose the one line option to increase the font size. If you are entering two pieces of information (e.g. a name and a phone number), we recommend adding one piece of information to the top line and one piece onto the bottom line.
We have a set of printed examples for you to look at on our website so you can see how different amounts and layouts of text will look when they are printed.

Names: you can choose to add a name in ANY format you like:

  • JUST a first name, surname, or nickname
  • A first name and a surname
  • A first name, middle name(s), and a surname
  • A first name, surname, and a nickname (an ideal option if you are ordering name labels for someone who is ONLY known by their nickname and not their given name)

Messages: you can also choose to add messages to your labels, such as:

  • “Please Return To”, “Property Of”, or “This Belongs To”
  • Medical or allergy information that can act as a medical alert in the event of an emergency

Contact Information: you could add a piece of contact information to help make it easier for lost items to be returned to you:

  • Add a home number or mobile number (we do NOT recommend adding both, if you also want to add a name)
  • Add an email address (we only recommend this if your email address is particularly short, otherwise your font size will be significantly reduced)
  • Add a room number if your labels are for a resident of a nursing or residential care home
  • Add a year/form/class name or school name for children

Sharing A Pack: we CANNOT split a pack between different names; every label within a pack must be printed with the same information BUT if you don’t want to buy a separate pack for each person you need name labels for, you could try one of the following workarounds:

  • Use a surname only so you can share a pack between members of your family
  • Use initials and a surname if your children (or relatives) share an initial
  • Enter two first names onto the top line (e.g. “Name 1 & Name 2”) and the surname on the bottom line
  • Enter two names (one on each line) and cut your labels in half
  • Enter both first names or initials along with the surname and cut off one of them as needed (e.g. request “Name 1 Surname Name 2” on one line and cut off one of the names)
  • Request blank labels or a blank line so you can write in the name or information you need with a suitable pen (e.g. a laundry pen)

Blank Line(s): to request blank labels or a blank line, simply use the spacebar on your keyboard to enter a single blank space into the line(s) you would like to be left blank.
If you would like to leave a blank space at the start or end of a line that you can fill in later (e.g. Room _______), please use the spacebar to create the blank space that you need AND add a note to your order to let us know that this is what you would like to do so that we can double check your order manually to ensure that it prints correctly.

Name Labels For Residents Of Nursing Homes & Care Homes

Monday, November 7th, 2016

Winter can be a difficult time of year, with a steady rise in the number of elderly people being moved into nursing and residential care homes over the last few weeks of the year. While this transition might be something that has been in the works for a while, more often than not it is a sudden change and it can be a stressful experience for both the individual and their friends and family.

While they might not be the first thing you think of, name labels can be a small way to help reduce the stresses and worries that come with the process of moving into a care home by giving residents (and their friends and families) some peace of mind by making sure that their personal possessions are safely and securely labelled.

Care facilities rely on the use of communal facilities and living spaces, which means that clothes and personal possessions may be mixed up or temporarily lost, left in communal spaces or “returned” to the wrong owner, causing a lot of anxiety to residents and taking up the valuable time of staff, carers, and visitors in the process. Name labels are a simple way to make it easy for items to be returned directly to their rightful owner.

Our multipurpose name labels (STIKINS ®) are extremely easy and quick to apply; they simply peel off their backing sheet and can be applied onto the wash-care label of clothing and fabric items or directly onto other personal items that a resident has with them. Stikins ® are already used in many residential homes across the UK; they are printed with the resident’s name (and room number, if preferred) and can be applied quickly and easily by staff, visitors, or by residents themselves. Our name labels have been independently tested to ensure that they will survive repeat trips through the washing machine and tumble drier (as well as dishwashers and microwaves).

We make and despatch name labels every day (Monday-Friday), so you can order and receive your labels in plenty of time (even if you have a friend or relative who is suddenly transferred into a care facility). We also offer a discount to nursing and residential care homes who wish to order name labels on behalf of their residents. You can order name labels at any time using our website ( or you can choose to order by phone or by post.

You can find out more about our Stikins ® name labels on our dedicated Information Page, get in touch with our Customer Service Team if you have any questions or would like some assistance placing an order, or visit our Stikins ® product page to place an order today.

Remember, Remember The 5th November…Is An Excellent Time To Buy Name Labels For Winter!

Saturday, November 5th, 2016

If you’ve made big plans this Bonfire Night we hope you have a marvellous time; whether you’re planning to build a splendid bonfire, watch a spectacular fireworks display, or simply have some fairground fun and food, we hope that you have a brilliant evening (and we’ve got everything crossed for good weather!).

Of course, we’d also like to point out that this is an excellent time of year to make an order of name labels for all those winter-related jobs that need doing. For example, if you’ve already dragged your winter wardrobe out from the back of your cupboard/wardrobe/attic/alternative storage space, you may well have a whole heap of winter warmers to get safely and securely labelled so they don’t go missing when you and your family need them most. From woolly hats and snuggly scarves to big, BIG coats and colourful mittens – winter means keeping track of a lot of accessories, which need to be put on, taken off, put on, taken off and it’s all too easy for something to get put down and left behind (for adults as well as children!).

You may also be planning to chase after some winter sun or have plans to spend your Christmas in a winter wonderland, on a warm sandy beach, or at home with friends and family, which means you might want to order some extra name labels to get all your holiday stuff safely labelled before you go (so you don’t end the year with someone losing their favourite jumper, cuddly toy, or other holiday essentials).

Name labels are also an ideal tool for dealing with (some of) the chaos that goes hand in hand with Christmas. Perhaps you’re looking at a crazy couple of weeks filled with event after event after event (after event), with school trips, residential trips, Christmas concerts, and Nativity performances – each of which will come with its own list of required “essentials” that need to be carted to and from (and around) different venues (usually in amongst a whole heap of identical or very, very similar belongings). Adding a name label is a quick and easy way to help make sure that your children can keep track of their stuff throughout the holiday season.

Our Stikins ® name labels are an easy to use multipurpose name label solution that can be used to quickly and securely label all kinds of items, including clothing and personal items. Each name label measures 30mm wide by 15mm high and is a plain white label printed with a bold black font to make sure that the information on the label is extremely easy to find and read when needed. They have been successfully tested by an independent laboratory using the BS EN ISO6330 wash test procedure for 30 washes at 40 degrees, and can be used to label any items that will be put through a washing machine, tumble drier, dishwasher, or microwave. With clothing and fabric items they must be applied onto the wash-care label to ensure that they stick properly, while they can be applied directly onto other personal items (if you use them to label shoes, you should apply them under the tongue or onto the side wall and NOT directly under the heel).

We make and despatch name labels EVERY DAY (Monday to Friday), with all orders we receive by 3pm being posted out same day by Royal Mail’s first class service – so you can make your order, receive your name labels, and get your stuff labelled quickly and easily, and then get on with the more fun things in life!

To get organised this winter, simply head on over to our Stikins ® product page to start placing an online order today!

Schools & PTAs – Your Commission Cheques Are On Their Way!

Tuesday, November 1st, 2016

We’ve finished totting up our totals and commission cheques are making their way to our wonderful partners who have participated in our fundraising scheme during this, our TWELFTH (and best ever!), year.

We’ve had a brilliant response from our partners, including those who have been members of our scheme for years as well as all of our lovely newcomers who have joined us over the last twelve months.

Your commission cheque is based on orders that we received between 1st October 2015 and 30th September 2016 where your unique fundraising number was quoted and will be awarded at either our basic rate of 15% (for schools, nurseries, and PTAs who have registered as members of our fundraising scheme) or our boosted rate of 30% (for members who have added a link to their website).

We hope that you are happy with your commission total and that your cheque will be a welcome contribution to whatever fundraising projects and goals you are striving to achieve.

If, however, you’re disappointed with the amount that you’ve got (or that you’ve received our basic rate of commission rather than our boosted rate), we highly recommend taking a trip to the Fundraising Section of our website and taking a look at our Fundraising Guide and, in particular, our Booster Plan.

Our Booster Plan was created based on our own experiences of running a commission scheme as well as feedback from existing partners and provides schools and PTAs with a list of simple (and free!) things that they can do to boost the amount of commission they earn. For example:

  • Add a link to your school or PTA website and boost your commission rate to 30%
  • Request free parent leaflets to hand out to parents to make them aware of the scheme
  • Request free posters to put up around the school

Visit our Booster Plan page to find out how you can improve on this year’s commission earnings, use our Linking Information page to find out how to add a link to your website (or let us know that you’ve added a link), take a look through our “Really Useful Downloads” page, or visit our School Requests page to order free Parent Leaflets.

We will be despatching all of our commission cheques THIS WEEK, so if you DON’T receive your commission cheque within the next few weeks, please GET IN TOUCH with us as soon as you can to let us know.

We Wish You All A Wonderfully Weird Halloween…

Monday, October 31st, 2016

Yes, tonight is the night that ghouls and ghosts are free to roam the Earth and we hope you have a spooktacular time tonight!

Whether you’re donning your most delightfully devilish costume to scare your neighbours (go trick or treating) or raise some hell (have a party with friends), spending the night on (or behind) the sofa with a line-up of scary films, or simply stuffing your face with sugary goodness because, well, it’s Halloween – we hope you have a wickedly good time!

And, remember, if you want to make sure that your Halloween haul doesn’t get pilfered by a stray imp, why not add a Stikins ® name label to your bag, basket, bucket, or box to make sure everyone knows to keep their hands (or claws or paws) off your stash!

To Use Stikins ® Or To Use Trons ® – That Is The Question…

Tuesday, October 25th, 2016

Here at Label Planet, we supply two very different kinds of name labels, which means that we often get questions from customers who aren’t sure what the difference is or which ones are the best ones for their needs.

So, we’ve put together this quick-fire guide to help you decide!

What’s The Difference & How Do They Work?
STIKINS ® are stick on name labels that simply peel off their backing sheet and stick onto the wash-care label of clothing (and other fabric items) or stick directly onto personal items. They are made of an extremely flexible plastic with an advanced adhesive. Each of these super slim labels measures 30mm wide by 15mm high and is a white label printed with a bold black font, which means they are easy to read when they are needed but are unobtrusive and discreet when they are not needed. They’re also very smooth, which means they won’t cause any discomfort if they happen to brush against skin when labelled items of clothing are worn.

TRONS ® are iron on name transfers that work in the same way as the transfers used to add designs to T-shirts; each label is made up of a single, extremely thin, layer of material that is impregnated with ink (to form the printed name or information that you want to be displayed) – during application, the transfer fuses and bonds with the material of the item being labelled to effectively become a part of the item itself. This creates a completely permanent name label on any fabric item, with the white background and bold black font making it easy to find and read when needed.

What Items Can They Be Used To Label?
STIKINS ® can be applied to pretty much ANYTHING. They can be used to label any fabric item with a wash-care label as well as personal items, such as bags and shoes, lunch boxes and water bottles, books and stationery kits, or phones and tablets. If you want to label fabric items (such as clothing, bedding and linens, or even toys), you should always apply your Stikins ® to the wash-care label; this is because fabric items are made using so many different material blends it would be impossible for us to test our adhesive on all of them. Instead our name labels have been tested on wash-care labels, which are usually made with one specific type of material. Applying them to the wash-care label also means that the labels tend to be discretely tucked out of the way until they are needed.

The ONLY items that they aren’t much use for are items like socks, which don’t have a wash-care label and are designed to flex around the foot as they are put on, taken off, or worn – this means that they don’t have a stable surface for the adhesive to bond with, which means that the name labels will tend to peel up or fall off.

TRONS ® can only be applied to fabric items and should be applied directly onto the material of these items (as they don’t tend to bond well with the glossy finish found on most wash-care labels).

How Do I Apply Them?
STIKINS ® simply stick in and stay in; all you need to do is carefully peel each name label off its backing sheet and apply it to the wash-care of your fabric items or directly onto any other personal items you wish to label.

To get the best possible results from your Stikins ®:
Apply them to the wash-care label of fabric items and wash new items of clothing before you apply your name labels. Leave your labelled items for 24 hours before you wash them for the first time to allow the adhesive to fully strengthen and set. When applying Stikins ® onto shoes, you should always apply them onto the side wall or beneath the tongue; if you apply them directly below the heel of the foot, the friction generated by movement will cause the print to rapidly disintegrate and wear away.

TRONS ® require a little more time (and a lot more patience) but are supplied with a simple six-step set of Instructions For Use leaflet to help guide you through the process:

  1. Find a hard flat surface (not an ironing board), turn the clothes inside out, and set your iron to its maximum heat setting (do not use steam).
  2. Cut or tear your silicon sheet into pieces slightly larger than a single name transfer (each piece should be used once).
  3. Put your garment on the edge of the surface and put a transfer face up on the very edge.
  4. Put a piece of your silicon on top of the label (shiny side down).
  5. Iron over the silicon paper with the tip of your iron; press down firmly and move your iron from side to side for 25 seconds.
  6. Remove the silicon paper (while still hot); allow your transfer to cool and then gently check if the label is completely fused into the item – if it is not, repeat step 5.

So, which should I choose?
It is entirely your decision but you should consider the following:

  • If you need to label a mix of fabric and non-fabric items, Stikins ® are the more cost-effective choice because you can buy one pack to label everything.
  • If you only need to label fabric items, you can choose to just order Stikins ® or just Trons ® but do remember that Trons ® will always require a bit more time and patience to apply correctly.

To place an order, visit our Stikins ® Product Page or our Trons ® Product Page. You can also find out more about our two name label products by visiting our dedicated information pages: Stikins ® Information & Trons ® Information.
