Today marks the beginning of this year’s British Science Week – actually a 10 day celebration made up of thousands of events taking place all across the country to celebrate STEM subjects, while also raising awareness and encouraging people (of all ages) to get involved with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics – at home, at school, and at work.

We hope all of our school fundraisers who are taking part in British Science Week have a truly amazing and inspiring time exploring the world of STEM over the next ten days.

November will see the 15th anniversary of our own project – Stikins ® name labels – which we’ve continued to develop and improve upon year after year – after year! We’re always researching new materials and manufacturing methods to find ways that we can improve our name labels, bit by bit, introducing more advanced materials, adhesives, and ribbons to produce name labels that simply stick on and stay on.

Creating name labels that “stick on and stay on” is a tricky business – especially when you think about how much a name label has to endure. From the rough and tumble of everyday wear and tear to repeat cycles through the washing machine – name labels have to put up with a lot. While you might not think of a washing machine as being a particularly challenging environment for clothing labels, everyday cleaning products and modern washing machines actually create a pretty aggressive environment, which will cause standard adhesives to fail. Plus with new technologies, materials, and ingredients being developed for clothing, cleaning products, and washing machines, stick on clothing labels have to constantly adapt to keep up with the new challenges created by the fast-moving pace of innovation and development in our modern world.
