Wimbledon-Winning Names & Fascinating Facts About The Championships
Every year, Wimbledon fever sweeps the country. This year, we’re celebrating with our favourite facts about Wimbledon – did you know that:
- Known officially as "The Championships, Wimbledon", it is also known as “The All England Lawn Tennis Championships” or “The Wimbledon Championships”.
- It is held at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (All England Club or AEC). Founded in 1868 as a private croquet club (All England Croquet Club), it became the All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club in 1877 thanks to a brand new game invented one year earlier – Sphairistikè or lawn tennis.
- In 1877, the club held a tennis tournament to raise money to repair the pony roller used to maintain the lawns. 22 amateur players competed for 12 guineas and a silver cup. Around 200 people watched the final, which was delayed for three days by rain. The club raised £10 – saving the broken pony roller and launching what is now the oldest tennis tournament in the world.
- Wimbledon remained amateurs only until 1968. It now features five main events (Gentlemen & Ladies’ Singles and Gentlemen’s, Ladies’, & Mixed Doubles), four junior events (Boys’ & Girls’ Singles and Doubles), and seven invitation events (Gentlemen’s & Ladies’ Wheelchair Singles and Doubles, Gentlemen’s & Ladies’ Doubles, and Senior Gentlemen’s Doubles).
- Wimbledon is one of four “Grand Slam” or “Major” tournaments and takes place over two weeks beginning on the first Monday in July. The other events are the Australian Open (January), French Open (May), and US Open (August/September). Wimbledon is the only major tournament played on grass courts (French uses clay courts, Australian and US use hard courts).
- Winning one of the five main events in all four tournaments in a single year is called a “Grand Slam”. Winning all four and a gold medal at the Summer Olympic Games is a “Golden Grand Slam/Golden Slam”. If a player also wins the ATP World Tour Final/WTA Tour Championship in November it is a “Super Slam”.
- Among the most successful Wimbledon champions are Roger Federer (8 Men's Singles), Todd Woodbridge (9 Men's Doubles), Martina Navratilova (9 Women's Singles, 7 Women’s Doubles, and 4 Mixed Doubles), and Elizabeth Ryan (12 Women's Doubles and 7 Mixed Doubles).
- This year there are 128 players in each of the Singles events, 64 pairs in the Gentlemen's & Ladies' Doubles, and 32 pairs in the Mixed Doubles. They will be competing for a combined prize total of £53,550,000 - the two Singles champions will get £3million each.
- Last year, 526,455 people attended Wimbledon and over 50 million people streamed the event online.

Winning Name Labels From Stikins®
Well, we think they’re champions, anyway – and so do our lovely customers who have left us over 12,000 five star reviews.
Stikins® name labels are a brilliant way to label your family’s belongings, including all your sporting gear. Thanks to our super sticky (and unique) adhesive, you can label up your sportswear, shoes, bags, towels, and equipment with one pack of our amazing stick on name labels.
It is easy to mix up sporting kit because it all looks very similar. Add in the chaos of a busy changing room and it’s easy for expensive kit to get lost. Our simple name labels make it instantly clear who owns what so you don't have to worry about replacing lost items.
We personalise our bright white labels with a bold, black font to make them really clear and easy to read. At just 30mm x 15mm, they fit neatly and discretely onto clothing and gear of all shapes and sizes. Best of all, they take seconds to apply. Simply peel a label from the backing sheet and apply firmly. Use the wash-care label of clothing and other fabric items and the sidewall or beneath the tongue of shoes. Do not apply your name labels beneath the heel because the print will wear away.
You can personalise your name labels however you like. A simple name works best in closed environments where that name is identifiable. For example, a gym/leisure centre where you are members. For the wider world, add a contact number so your items can always be returned!
You can order online or by phone. We despatch all orders by Royal Mail's first class service on the same day (order by 3pm, Mon-Fri) or next working day.
