Just for Fun: Celebrating The Australian Open & Sticky Name Labels For Sporty Kids

The Australian Open is underway so we’re serving up our favourite facts about this down under Grand Slam tournament. Plus, why Stikins ® labels are the perfect partner for sporty kids.
Did You Know – Facts About The Australian Open
This year’s Australian Open takes place from 14th – 28th January and we’re celebrating with our favourite facts:
- Founded in 1905, the Australian Open is the first and youngest of four “Grand Slam” or “major” tennis tournaments each year. The others are the French Open (Roland-Garros, May-June, 1891), Wimbledon (The Championships, June-July, 1877), and the US Open (August-September, 1881). All four were designated “Official Championships” in 1923.
- The Australian Open began as the Australasian Championships, which makes it the only tournament held in two countries (Australia and New Zealand). It became the Australian Championships in 1927 and the Australian Open in 1969.
- Beginning as a grass tournament, it was first played at Warehouseman’s Cricket Ground in Melbourne (now the Albert Reserve Tennis Centre). In 1988, it moved to its current Melbourne Park complex, which used green hardcourts. Since 2008, it has used blue hardcourts.
- Nicknamed the “Happy Slam”, it is the highest attended Grand Slam with over 902,000 attendees in 2023.
- It has an Extreme Heat Policy, which stops play when temperatures exceed 40°C.
- Originally played in January, it moved to March in 1920, August in 1923, back to January in 1977, when it moved again to December – meaning it was held twice in 1977. After the 1985 tournament, the event moved back to January, skipping a year due to scheduling conflicts, meaning the next tournament was in January 1987.
- Australian Ken Rosewall is both the youngest male and oldest player to win the Australian Open (18 in 1953 and 37 in 1972). Martina Hingis is the youngest female winner (16) and Thelma Coyne Long the oldest female winner (35).
- The longest match was 2012’s final between Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, which lasted 5 hours and 53 minutes.
Stikins ® Name Labels Are The Perfect Partner For Sporty Kids
Stikins ® name labels are a brilliant addition to your kids’ sporting kit. Our unique adhesive works on kit of all shapes and sizes including clothing, accessories (like gloves), water bottles, and sporting equipment. Simply apply firmly onto your items (or the wash-care label of fabric items) and they’ll stay put. Our name labels are fully waterproof and will survive repeat trips through the washing machine, tumble dryer, dishwasher, and microwave.
So, when your kids are rushing in or out of the changing rooms, grabbing their stuff off the floor or field, or taking part in a tournament away from home, you can make sure that they can easily find and keep hold of all of their sporting kit along the way. Plus, if anything does go missing (or gets mixed in with someone else’s kit), name labels make it easy for items to be returned.
Stikins ® labels are bright white and printed with a bold black font. This makes your personalisation really clear and easy to read. Our name labels measure 30mm by 15mm, which means they fit neatly (and discretely) onto kit of all shapes and sizes.
You can request a name only or personalise your labels further with a team name or contact information (which helps items to be returned if they are lost away from your home ground!).
We supply Stikins ® labels in packs of 30, 60, 90, or 120 name labels. You can order online at any time or by phone during office hours (9am-5pm). We offer a 10% discount when you order three or more packs (which can be the same, different, or any mix you like). If you’re a team looking for a way to label team kit, please get in touch to discuss your requirements.
