Space Stikins Name TagsStikins Name Tags Presents Facts About…Halley’s Comet

Today is the anniversary of the most recent appearance of Halley’s Comet so we’re celebrating with a few fascinating facts from the Stikins name tags team:

  • Halley’s Comet was the first comet to be recognised as a short-period comet (a comet that takes less than 200 years to complete one orbit around the sun).
  • It’s the only short-period comet regularly visible to the naked eye and the only naked-eye comet that might appear twice in a human lifetime.
  • Currently, its orbit takes 75.32 years to complete – meaning its next appearance is predicted to be on 28th July 2061 – and extends from a mere 55,773,484 miles away from the sun (between the orbits of Mercury and Venus) to a massive 3,253,453,254 miles from the sun (beyond the orbit of Neptune).
  • The central nucleus of Halley’s Comet is shaped like a peanut, measures around 9 miles long by 5 miles wide, and is composed of ice, rock, and dust.
  • Sightings of Halley’s Comet appear throughout recorded history (including an appearance on the Bayeux Tapestry) – the earliest is contained in a Chinese document (“Records Of The Grand Historian”) from 240BC.
  • In 1705, Edmond (or Edmund) Halley published a study of 24 separate comet observations in which he calculated that three of these observations (from 1531, 1607, and 1682) were actually the same comet – which he predicted would return in 1758. It did – although it wasn’t actually spotted until 25th December – and was named in his honour the following year.

DID YOU KNOW: although Halley’s Comet can only be seen once every 76 years, you can see the after-effects of its journey every year in two meteor showers that occur in early May (the Eta Aquariids) and late October (the Orionids). The sun changes some of the comet’s ice into a gas, allowing rock particles to break away and become meteors as they reach the Earth’s atmosphere. While the Orionids are the result of rocks left behind after Halley’s most recent appearance, meteors in the Eta Aquariids broke away centuries ago.

We hope you had a brilliant time celebrating the new year with friends and family (and we hope that one or two of you have made a New Year’s Resolution to buy more name tags in 2018!).

Are you waiting for your name tags?

We’re busy working our way through all of the orders we received for our stick on name tags over the Christmas break and we hope to be all caught by today or tomorrow. We’ll also be making a start on replying to any emails we received during the holidays – although we do always prioritise making and despatching orders of our name tags for clothes and personal items, so please bear with us as we catch up.

If you haven’t received anything by the end of the week, please contact our Customer Service Team so we can assist you further.

Christmas FAQs - Name Tags

The Stikins ® guide to ordering name tags this Christmas

There are only FIVE days left before we shut down for our Christmas Break, which means you have FIVE days left to place a last minute order for our sticky name tags! If you need to order Stikins ® (and you want them to arrive before Christmas), we’ve put together this set of FAQs as a guide to placing a last minute order before Christmas…

  • When are you open this week?

We are open 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.

  • Can I order name tags for delivery BEFORE Christmas?

Yes! We’ll be printing our stick on name tags every day this week. If you absolutely, positively need your name tags to arrive before Christmas, you should definitely order as soon as possible and put them on our special delivery service.

  • What’s the difference between standard delivery and special delivery?

Standard delivery is via Royal Mail’s first class service and is included in the prices you see on our website; special delivery is via Royal Mail’s Special Delivery Guaranteed service and costs £5.75.

Royal Mail do NOT guarantee that first class items will be delivered next day and it is likely that these items may be delayed at this time of year; this means that the ONLY way to GUARANTEE that your stick on name tags will arrive BEFORE Christmas is to put them on the special delivery service, which guarantees that your order will be delivered before 1pm on the next (working) day.

If you order on Friday 22nd December, you will need to upgrade to Royal Mail’s Saturday Special Delivery Guaranteed Service; Royal Mail charge £8.75 for this service.

  • How do I upgrade to your special delivery service?

Currently, special delivery is ONLY available to request by phone; simply call our Customer Service Team on 01270 668076 to place your order – we are available 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday.

  • What if I want to order school name tags for delivery to a non-UK address?

Unfortunately, the last delivery dates for despatch to non-UK addresses (including the Republic of Ireland) have passed and we will not be able to despatch any orders to these addresses for delivery before Christmas. If you have relatives in the UK who are visiting you over the Christmas holidays, you may wish to have your name tags delivered to them so that they can deliver them to you when they visit.

  • So, when are your last despatch dates?

3pm on WEDNESDAY: last despatch for orders being sent via standard delivery (Royal Mail’s first class service)

3pm on THURSDAY: last despatch for orders being sent via special delivery (Royal Mail’s special delivery guaranteed service)

3pm on FRIDAY: last despatch for orders being sent via (extra) special delivery (Royal Mail’s Saturday special delivery guaranteed service)

  • Will you stop accepting orders before Christmas?

NO but if you don’t upgrade to a special delivery service OR you order after our last despatch dates, your name tags may NOT arrive before Christmas.

Orders despatched via Royal Mail’s first class service that don’t arrive before Christmas will usually be delivered in the days after Christmas when service in your area resumes.

  • How do I get in touch with you?

You can send an email to or give us a call on 01270 668076.

  • What happens if I place an order after you close for Christmas?

Nothing – until the office re-opens at 9am on Tuesday 2nd January 2018 and we start printing our sticky name tags again!

Please note: we are more than happy for customers to email us with questions and queries over the Christmas Holidays BUT we will NOT be able to answer any enquiries until the office reopens in January when we will do our best to answer as quickly as we possibly can.

Christmas with Stikins Name Labels

Names for Father Christmas & the last posting dates for our name labels!

Yes, there are only TEN DAYS left until Christmas Day and hopefully you’re managing to keep on top of the chaos that is Christmas! To help you into the spirit, we’ve decided to look into the world of festive names…

While taking a look at Christmas inspired names, we were struck by how many different names are used to refer to those Christmas (and Winter) visitors who bring gifts to children each year. Here in the UK, we’re all extremely familiar with the jolly man himself, “Father Christmas”, but did you know that there are many other Christmas and winter gift-bringers who are celebrated around the world? Here’s just some of the festive figures that we encountered…

Christmas Names - Stikins Name Labels

While the majority of these figures follow “Old Man” traditions, there are some female gift-givers to be found, including:

  • Saint Lucia/Saint Lucy: most commonly celebrated in Scandinavia and Italy, Saint Lucy is associated with light and “festivals of light” which are held in her honour on the 13th December. In Italy, she brings gifts to good children and coal to bad children – children leave out food to entice the donkey and make sure that Saint Lucy visits their house.
  • The Snow Girl/The Snow Maiden: Snegurochka is celebrated in Russia, where she is usually depicted as the granddaughter and helper of Ded Moroz (“Old Man Frost” or “Grandfather Frost”) – who delivers presents to children on New Year’s Eve.
  • Frau Holle/Old Mother Frost: also known as Holda, Huld, or Hulda, she is variously depicted as a Goddess of Winter, of the Sky, and of the Weather. In some traditions, she flies through the skies on 24th December (also known as “Mother’s Night”) to bring gifts to children. The Grimm Brothers used her in one of their fairy tales; snow falls to earth whenever she shakes out the blanket on her bed and she rewards a good child with gold and punishes a bad child with hot pitch.
  • Perchta: also known as Percht, Berchta, and Bertha, Perchta is a variation of the Frau Holle figure (or vice versa) and traditionally roams the countryside between Christmas and Epiphany, rewarding good children and punishing bad children.
  • Befana the Christmas Witch: celebrated throughout Italy, Befana is an old woman who delivers gifts on Epiphany Eve (the night of 5th January); good children wake up to a stocking full of gifts and sweets, while naughty children find a lump of coal – traditionally, children find nice gifts AND a lump of coal (rock sugar darkened with caramel colouring) as a reminder that they haven’t always been on their best behaviour…

Last posting dates for ordering Stikins ® name labels before Christmas…

So, now that we’ve shared some festive fun with you it’s onto our second gift – our last posting dates for ordering Stikins ® name labels! We’ll be printing our labels for clothing & personal items all next week (Monday – Friday); any orders we receive before 3pm will be despatched on the same day, while those received after 3pm will be sent next day.

Orders are despatched via Royal Mail’s first class service as standard BUT we highly recommend upgrading to our special delivery service (Royal Mail’s Special Delivery Guaranteed service; shipping cost £5.75) to make absolutely sure that your name labels arrive before Christmas. This is because Royal Mail do NOT guarantee that first class items will arrive next day AND because first class mail does tend to see delays in the run up to Christmas.

How to upgrade your name labels order to a special delivery service…

Currently, our special delivery service is only available to request by phone; this allows us to make absolutely sure that your stick on name labels will be made and despatched on the SAME DAY so you definitely get them on the NEXT DAY. Our Customer Service Team is available Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm – simply give us a call on 01270 668076 and we’ll be happy to help.

Please note:

1. Today is the LAST DAY to order Christmas name labels for delivery to the Republic of Ireland.
2. If you find yourself leaving things to the very last minute, the LAST DAY for any orders of school labels, equipment name tags, and general purpose name stickers will be Friday 22nd December (up to 3PM).

To receive your order on Saturday, you will need to order by phone and request our Saturday delivery option (shipping cost: £8.75).

Once normal opening hours resume, you can order at ANYTIME by filling in our handy online order form or you can give us a call (Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm) to order your personalised name labels by phone.

Back to School Stikins Name Labels

It’s back-to-school time – Have you ordered your name labels?

Yes, September is here and the summer is fast falling away into autumn but we’re still busy printing and packing name labels for those emergency back-to-school orders. Don’t worry if you’ve run out of labels or you’ve forgotten to buy new name labels in the rush of getting ready for the new school term – all orders we receive by 3pm will be despatched same day, while orders received after 3pm or over the weekend will be despatched on the next working day. If you need your order urgently, simply give us a call and you can upgrade your order to a guaranteed next day delivery option (this service costs £5.75 and our Customer Service Team is available 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday).

Names inspired by the months of the year…

Seeing as it’s the first day of a brand new month, we thought we’d take a look at a few names that are associated with the months of the year, some of which have actually been requested for name labels in recent years…

  • While “January” itself is a great name, you could also opt for Janus (the Roman God of beginnings, gates, transitions, time, duality, doorways, passages, and endings) or Juno (the Roman Goddess of marriage, women, and Rome, as well as queen of the gods).
  • Like January, “April” is a lovely “monthly” name and is, in fact, the most popular month-inspired name amongst Stikins ® customers.
  • “May” is another popular name, as is Maia – the Greek Goddess for whom the month of May was named.
  • “June” takes second place amongst our customers, while Juno (the Roman Goddess from January) also has strong associations with the month of June.
  • While we didn’t have any name labels for Augustus (the Roman emperor for whom the month is named), we did print labels with the name “August” itself.

Sadly, so far, we haven’t printed any name labels for a February, March, July, September, October, November, OR December – but there’s plenty of time yet!

If you are in need of name labels to prepare your children’s belongings for the back-to-school period, please do not hesitate to contact the Stikins ® team today! You can order a pack via phone, email or post OR you can fill in our handy online enquiry form here.

Name labels happy new year

A Happy New Year From Label Planet!

Yes, 2016 has departed and, even though we’re only three days in, we’re already back at work and printing the first batch of name labels orders for 2017.

If you placed an order for name labels over the winter break, your name labels will be printed and despatched this afternoon via Royal Mail’s first class service. We’ll continue to run production every day at 3pm (Monday to Friday) so if you find that you’re in need of a quick top up order, you’ve completely forgotten to order name labels for the new year, or you’ve got an emergency name label situation, don’t worry – your name labels will be on their way to you in no time at all!

You can order from our website at any time, pop an order in the post, or give us a call to order by phone (Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm). All orders are despatched via Royal Mail’s first class service as standard, although you can call us to upgrade to a guaranteed next (working) day delivery option (UK delivery only, £5.75 shipping) if you need to make sure that your labels arrive before an upcoming deadline.

We also ship to a limited number of non-UK countries; these orders are despatched via Royal Mail’s International Standard service (shipping cost: £1.50 per pack) and should be delivered in 3-5 working days (Western Europe) or 5-7 working days (Rest of the World).

If you have any questions or queries about ordering name labels from Label Planet – whether you’ve ordered over the winter break or you’d like to place an order now – please get in touch with our Customer Service Team for assistance. To place an order online, get started by visiting our Stikins ® name labels product page or our Trons ® name transfers product page.

Last Orders (Of Name Labels) Please!

Monday, December 19th, 2016

name labels last chance

While it’s unlikely that you’ll be unaware that Christmas is, essentially, here – in the rush to get everything ready, you might have THOUGHT about making an “end-of-the-year” name label order without actually getting around to making said order, which means that you might be wondering if there’s still time to do so.

And, of course, there is! (Just about!)

We will be processing and despatching orders of name labels up to 3pm on Thursday (22nd December).

Our last orders will be despatched on Thursday evening, via Royal Mail’s first class service, although you will need to bear in mind that the last recommended posting day for first class mail is actually Wednesday 21st December – and items sent after this date are unlikely to arrive before Christmas (although, if we’re honest, items sent before this date might not arrive either – given the extremely high level of post being despatched at this time of year).

If you do absolutely have to have your name labels BEFORE Christmas, we advise that you give us a call and request our upgraded delivery option. This service costs £5.75 and guarantees delivery by 1pm on the next working day – which really means you should order by Thursday 22nd December. And, again, given the time of year we would advise customers that it is possible that even “guaranteed” delivery services may be delayed.

So, if you really need to have your name labels before Christmas, you need to place an order before 3pm on Thursday (22nd ) and request our upgraded delivery option. If you don’t mind when your labels arrive, you can order at any time before 3pm on Thursday (22nd) OR you can even place an order over the Christmas break – when things are a little bit “quieter”. Any orders we receive after 3pm on Thursday will be made and despatched when we return from our Christmas break on January 3rd 2017.

If you have any questions or queries about ordering name labels BEFORE Christmas, please contact our Customer Service Team as soon as possible; alternatively, you can simply send us an email over the Christmas break and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can once we return in the new year.

Visit our website to find out all of the ways you can get in touch or visit our product pages to place an order for Stikins ® name labels or Trons ® name transfers.

December Is Here! Which Means ‘Tis The Season To Be Jolly (& Make A Note Of This Year’s Last Posting Dates)!

Thursday, December 1st, 2016

name labels jolly

Yes, December has officially begun, which means that even the most “bah humbug” of Scrooges has to admit that Christmas is certainly and most definitely on the way – and that means it’s time for our annual blog about this year’s LAST POSTING DATES!

If you are planning on ordering name labels this month (but haven’t quite got around to it yet), these are the dates that you’ll need to bear in mind if you absolutely positively have to have your labels BEFORE Christmas.

We do print name labels EVERY DAY (Mon-Fri) so every order we receive in December will be despatched on the same or next working day BUT while we can promise a speedy despatch, we cannot guarantee a swift delivery (unless you upgrade to a guaranteed next day delivery option). As always, the post does get less and less reliable as we edge closer to Christmas, so it’s best to get your order placed as soon as you can. If you are especially concerned about receiving your labels in plenty of time, please call our Customer Service Team to request an upgrade to a guaranteed next (working) day delivery service (this shipping option is only available by phone and costs £5.75).

If you do find that you’ve forgotten to order name labels OR that you unexpectedly need a few extras (perhaps you’ve discovered a pile of un-labelled things, have been presented with a list of “required” uniform and equipment for the next semester, or have a friend or relative who needs to move into a nursing or residential care home suddenly), don’t panic: the last and final posting dates for ordering name labels from Label Planet are as follows:

NON-UK ORDERS (Royal Mail’s International Standard Service)
Friday 2nd December: Africa, Middle East
Wednesday 7th December: Asia, Cyprus, Far East, Eastern Europe (except Czech Republic, Poland, and Slovakia)
Thursday 8th December: Caribbean, Central, and South America
Friday 9th December: Australia, Greece, New Zealand
Wednesday 14th December: Czech Republic, Germany, Italy, Poland
Thursday 15th December: Canada, Finland, Sweden, USA
Friday 16th December: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Portugal, Netherlands, Norway, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland

BRITISH FORCES POST OFFICE (BFPO) (Royal Mail’s International Standard HM Forces Mail)
Friday 12th December: Static BFPOs

Wednesday 21st December: Royal Mail’s First Class & Signed For First Class
Thursday 22nd December: Royal Mail’s Special Delivery Guaranteed
Friday 23rd December: Royal Mail’s Special Delivery Saturday Guaranteed

PLEASE NOTE: we must receive your order by 3pm on the dates listed above to allow us time to make, pack, and despatch your order.
We would NOT recommend relying on the Saturday Guaranteed Delivery option if at all possible as, in our experience, this service is never as reliable as their Guaranteed Next Working Day Delivery option.

If you have ANY concerns about making a last minute order, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us; visit our website to view all of our contact information or to simply go ahead and make your winter order of name labels today!
