Name Labels Vs Sun Creams – How To Make Your Labels Last All Summer Long

Friday, July 7th, 2017

You may have noticed that we describe our Stikins ® name labels and Trons ® name transfers as being “resistant to children’s alcohol-free sun creams and lotions” and perhaps wondered why we mention sun creams as being a particular problem for name label products.

Name labels are often applied into clothing where they come into contact with skin OR onto personal items (especially lunch boxes and water bottles) that are handled a lot, which may result in sun cream being transferred from the skin onto a name label. Modern sun creams are made with increasingly advanced ingredients designed to boost the protection offered by these products (for example by increasing the level of protection, improving water resistance or durability, or simply making a product easier to apply) and, while these ingredients do make sun creams and lotions extremely effective, they can also be quite damaging to the surfaces that they come into contact with over time – including name labels.

While name labels themselves are unlikely to be damaged (they are, after all, designed to withstand repeat cycles through washing machines and/or dishwashers), the printing inks used to personalise these labels may not be resistant to some of the ingredients used in sun creams and lotions – which can result in the print disintegrating or smearing away completely.

Beating The “Blockers”
Sun creams and lotions often contain “blockers”, which are ingredients that protect us from sunlight by preventing (or blocking) ultraviolet light from reaching our skin (by reflecting, scattering, or absorbing UV rays). A common example is titanium dioxide, which is a particularly popular ingredient because it is believed to be less irritating than other chemicals – making it ideal for use in products that are intended to be used by children or individuals with sensitive skin.

While titanium dioxide is brilliant at providing protection against harmful UV light, it is also extremely damaging to some printing inks – which is why we have sourced an advanced ink for our name label products that is fully resistant to titanium dioxide (as well as other similar ingredients used to produce sun creams and lotions).

The Problem With “Alcohol”
Unfortunately, there is one ingredient used in SOME sun creams and lotions that our ink is NOT currently resistant to – and that is alcohol. Alcohols are used in sun creams and lotions for a variety of reasons; some make sun creams more opaque (less transparent) or thicker or less greasy, some act as emollients (moisturisers), some help to preserve sun creams (so they last longer “on the shelf”), and some are used as carriers – particularly in sun sprays, where the alcohol helps to propel the spray more efficiently.

The problem is that alcohols are solvents; solvents are capable of dissolving other substances and this includes some printing inks used to personalise name labels. While our printing ink is not fully resistant to alcohol (or other solvents), this doesn’t mean that your name labels won’t survive the summer.

Firstly, alcohol is only used in SOME sun cream products and many manufacturers offer alcohol-free alternatives. Sun creams and lotions designed for children and individuals with sensitive skin are – as a general rule – among these alcohol-free product ranges.

Secondly, the risk of damage tends to exist immediately after a product has been applied (i.e. while the sun cream is drying or being absorbed into the skin); as long as you allow plenty of time for your sun cream product to dry or absorb in place, there won’t be any danger of the alcohol coming into contact with, and therefore damaging, the print on your name labels.

You can find out much more about our name labels by visiting our Stikins ® Information Page or our Trons ® Information Page – alternatively, you can visit our Stikins ® and Trons ® product pages to place an order for your very own name labels that will remain firmly in place all summer – and all year – long.

Happy Limerick Day (There Once Was A Label Called Stikins…)

Friday, May 12th, 2017

Today is National Limerick Day; a day for encouraging people to read (and write their own) limericks.

Limericks are short five-line poems that are generally designed to be funny (although many are also rude). They’ve been around since the early 18th century but were popularised in the 19th century by the English artist, illustrator, musician, author, AND poet Edward Lear – known best as the author of the nonsense poem “The Owl and the Pussycat”.

The Owl and The Pussycat – illustration by Edward Lear            (via Wikimedia Commons)

In fact, the 12th May was chosen as Limerick Day because it is Lear’s birthday (which means today is also The Owl & The Pussycat Day!); Lear wrote over 200 limericks, which tended to be more nonsensical than humorous (or rude) but nevertheless played an important role in popularising the limerick form.

So, why not celebrate Limerick Day by writing your own limerick? Here at Label Planet, we’ve had a go and came up with the following (we apologise wholeheartedly in advance…):

The Stikins ® Limerick
All parents know this to be true;
Their kids will lose anything new
But use a name label
And they will be able
To keep their stuff safe all year through!

(As we said – we’re really, really sorry!)

For something that we’re much, much better at, why not visit stikins.co.uk to take a look at our superb stick on name labels; these easy to use, multipurpose name labels are designed to simply stick on and stay on – with no ironing and no sewing required – leaving busy parents time to get on with the more important things in life!

Check Out What’s New This Summer From Stikins ® Name Labels

Friday, May 5th, 2017

Here at Label Planet, we want our products and services to be the best they can possibly be – which is why we work hard each and every year to find NEW ways to help our customers AND to improve our OLD ways to make them even better than they were before!

Take our Stikins ® name labels; we’ve been selling Stikins ® since 2003 and we really believe that these labels are a brilliant solution to the problem of labelling items safely and securely (you don’t have to take our word for it though – we’ve received over 5,000 independent reviews from parents and families who have already tried our name labels for themselves).

However, we also know that there’s always room for improvement and we’ve launched several new and/or improved versions of our name labels (in 2010, 2013, 2015, and 2017). This year, we’ve actually gone one step further by improving the OLD version of our Stikins ® (by developing a new unique Stikins ® adhesive) AND introducing a NEW version of our Stikins ® (in the form of the Stikins ® Name Label Kit).

The unique Stikins ® adhesive is even better than our previous adhesive and has been developed using the latest materials and manufacturing processes; this adhesive is ONLY available on Stikins ® name labels and is designed to make absolutely sure that our multipurpose name labels will simply stick on and stay on!

The Stikins ® Name Label Kit contains sixty blank Stikins ® name labels and a pen so you can personalise each and every label exactly as you wish – so you can share the pack between as many different people and purposes as you like. These name labels are made with the same material and Stikins ® adhesive as our printed name labels but have a special “write-on” matt finish.

We’ve also been working on our website to make it an even more detailed and useful resource for our customers and fundraising partners.

STIKINS ® NAME LABELS: we’ve updated our information pages to provide customers with everything they need to know about our name labels, including a completely updated Frequently Asked Questions page to help answer questions and queries that parents may have about how to order and/or use Stikins ® name labels. We also offer customer service through our Customer Service Team who are available to help via email and phone – Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

Find out more about Stikins ® on our Stikins ® Information Page or get the answers to your questions on our new look FAQs Page.

SCHOOL FUNDRAISING WITH STIKINS ®: we run a fundraising scheme that allows schools and PTAs (and other groups) to earn up to 30% commission on sales of name labels. The scheme is completely free to join and provides year round fundraising with only the minimal input required; we allocate each school or PTA with a fundraising number (which parents quote when they order from us) and supply free resources (such as leaflets and samples) to help our partners promote the scheme to parents.

Visit the Fundraising Home Page to find out more.

Please note: we are no longer selling mixed packs of Stikins ® name labels and silver name labels (product codes: M240 and M120); however, both items are still available to buy as individual product packs.

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day To One & All!

Friday, March 17th, 2017

Yes, today is Saint Patrick’s Day, and celebrations are taking place all around the world in honour of Saint Patrick, the Patron Saint of Ireland.

Did You Know:

  • March 17th is the Feast Day of Saint Patrick because it is the traditional date given for his death.
  • Saint Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland, Nigeria, and Montserrat, as well as engineers and paralegals – he is also invoked for protection against snakes, sins, and witchcraft.
  • Saint Patrick adopted the name Patrick (or “Patricius” in its original Latin form); his real birth name is unknown, although “Maewyn Succat” is commonly used.
  • While he is the patron saint of Ireland, he was actually born in Roman Britain – locations in both Wales and Scotland have claimed to be his actual place of birth.
  • Saint Patrick’s Day celebrations involve a LOT of green because green is traditionally used as the national colour of Ireland BUT Saint Patrick is also associated with blue and “Saint Patrick’s Blue” is used as the official colour of state, featuring on the Irish coat of arms and the presidential standard of the President of Ireland. Blue is also used as an official colour by a variety of Irish universities, sports teams, and military units.
  • The shamrock is associated with Saint Patrick’s Day because a traditional story claims that Saint Patrick used the three leaves of the shamrock to explain the Christian Holy Trinity – it has since become associated with Ireland and is often used as one of the traditional symbols of Ireland. The shamrock itself is a type of clover – although there remains some dispute as to whether or not the shamrock is a specific variety of clover (with Trifolium dubium (lesser trefoil) and Trifolium repens (white clover) being the two varieties most commonly considered to be shamrocks).

Did You Also Know:

While Stikins ® name labels are predominantly sold within the UK, we also supply name labels to Ireland (and other European countries). Shipping is charged at £1.50 per item and you can visit our Delivery Information page to find a full list of countries we can despatch to within the European postal area.

Simply visit our website, enter the details of the pack(s) you would like to order, and select “NON UK” as your billing address when you check out (alternatively, if you are using a UK billing address, simply fill out your UK address and then tick the box to add a different shipping address).

Happy Middle Name Pride Day!

Friday, March 10th, 2017

You might not know it but today is “Middle Name Pride Day” – a day for taking all of those middle names that are usually hidden away on forms and official bits of paperwork and bringing them out into the daylight for a big old celebration!

Middle names are often used for “special” names, for example, to honour family members and relatives, to celebrate important things in a family’s life (such as important places, months, or ideals), or simply to have some fun with a slightly “out there” name – that can be used or hidden away depending on whether or not the child finds the name exceptionally good or exceptionally embarrassing later in life.

For most people, their middle name is actually a big part of what makes them “unique” – while you might share your first name with a lot of people, the combination of your first name and middle name can feel much more uniquely “you”.

So, we’ve taken a look at our past orders to have a bit of an investigation into the middle names chosen by our customers…

For girls, the runaway success has to be “Rose”, which was our most popular middle name by far – followed (at a slight distance) by “May/Mae/Mai”. For boys, “J names” proved most popular, with “James” and “John” taking the two top spots.

While traditional names were the most popular choices for middle names, we also found that plenty of parents had decided to get a bit more creative with their middle names, with inspiration coming from all kinds of sources, including animals, nature, myths and legends, and a few pop culture icons as well. Some of our favourites include:

Artemis, Astrid, Belle, Blue, Bluebell, Clover, Cruz, Fox, Harper, Hunter, Star, Storm, Tinkerbell, Valentine, Xena, Wren, Zen, Zephyr, Zigi.

While we don’t get to see all of the middle names that our customers have chosen, we do get a fair amount of initials, and we found a few surprises in our order history:

  • “J” is the most popular letter by far, followed by “A”, “M”, “E”, “L”, and “R”.
  • Least popular is “U”, which had a very unfortunate year in 2016 and appeared in absolutely no orders as a middle initial, followed by “Q”, “Y”, “X”, and “V”, while “Z” proved to be our most popular “unpopular” letter.
  • Girls were most likely to have middle names starting with “R” or “M”, while boys were most likely to have “J” or “A”.
  • While “Q”, “U”, “X”, and “Y” names were all as equally (unpopular) with our customers for boys and girls, “Z” and “C” names had equal popularity.
  • The biggest gaps were between the letters “G”, “I”, and “M” (which were much more popular for girls than boys) and “D”, “H”, and “W” (which were much more popular for boys than girls).

Did You Know: we run a Fundraising Scheme for schools, PTAs, and other activity/youth groups and clubs to allow them to raise money by earning commission on sales of Stikins ® name labels. Schools and groups can earn up to 30% commission on orders of name labels, which they can then put towards any ongoing fundraising goals and projects. There’s no membership fee to pay and no ongoing costs; simply fill in our one-stop registration form to start fundraising all year round!

We’ve just given our Fundraising pages a bit of a makeover to make them even better and easier to use. To take a look and find out more, simply head on over to our Fundraising Home Page today!
