Tips About Text – Name Label FAQs About Fonts, Names, & Special Characters

Monday, November 14th, 2016

If you’ve never ordered name labels before you might be a bit confused about what information you should request on your name labels. This blog post should give you a bit of helpful advice to make sure that your name labels have the perfect print for you!

As a personalised product, it is ultimately up to you to decide what text you want to include on your name labels BUT there are a few things to think about to make sure that your name labels are as effective as possible.

THE FONT
All of our name labels are printed with a bold, black font; we do not offer any other font colours or styles.

The font size is determined by how many characters you request on your labels. Our name labels measure 30mm wide by 15mm high (Stikins ®) or 35mm wide by 15mm (Trons ®) only – they DO NOT GET BIGGER OR LONGER to allow your text to fit. Instead, our system will count up the number of characters you have requested on each line and then REDUCE the font size until it is small enough to allow all of those characters to fit onto your name labels.

To get a bigger font size, therefore, you should keep your information short and sweet. You CAN request up to 30-35 characters per line but we would advise using no more than 20. Most of our customers request a name only, although you can comfortably fit a name (first name and surname) on the top line and a phone number on the bottom line. If you want the largest font size possible, you would need to use a single name only (e.g. just a surname).

We DO NOT recommend including addresses or email addresses (as these tend to use up a LOT of characters), or trying to include more than TWO bits of information on your name labels.

THE TEXT
Our name labels can ONLY be printed with standard alphanumeric characters (A-Z and 0-9); we cannot print any images or emojis – although we can print emoticons made out of standard characters and punctuation marks (^__^).

We can also print the following accented characters from the standard European keyboard:
À Á Â Ä Ã Å Æ à á â ä â å æ È É Ê Ë è é ê ë Í Î Ï ì í î ï Ô Ö Õ ò ó ô ö õ Ù Ú Û Ü ù ú û ü Ç ç Ñ ñ Ý Ÿ ý ÿ Ø ø Ð ð ß ƒ

THE LAYOUT
When you order name labels from us, you will be asked if you want your text on one line or two lines. The default option is TWO LINES and we recommend leaving this option selected unless you are entering a short amount of information only. For example, if you are using a single name (e.g. surname only) or want labels printed with a single word then you could choose the one line option to increase the font size. If you are entering two pieces of information (e.g. a name and a phone number), we recommend adding one piece of information to the top line and one piece onto the bottom line.
We have a set of printed examples for you to look at on our website so you can see how different amounts and layouts of text will look when they are printed.

TIPS FOR CHOOSING YOUR TEXT:
Names: you can choose to add a name in ANY format you like:

  • JUST a first name, surname, or nickname
  • A first name and a surname
  • A first name, middle name(s), and a surname
  • A first name, surname, and a nickname (an ideal option if you are ordering name labels for someone who is ONLY known by their nickname and not their given name)

Messages: you can also choose to add messages to your labels, such as:

  • “Please Return To”, “Property Of”, or “This Belongs To”
  • Medical or allergy information that can act as a medical alert in the event of an emergency

Contact Information: you could add a piece of contact information to help make it easier for lost items to be returned to you:

  • Add a home number or mobile number (we do NOT recommend adding both, if you also want to add a name)
  • Add an email address (we only recommend this if your email address is particularly short, otherwise your font size will be significantly reduced)
  • Add a room number if your labels are for a resident of a nursing or residential care home
  • Add a year/form/class name or school name for children

Sharing A Pack: we CANNOT split a pack between different names; every label within a pack must be printed with the same information BUT if you don’t want to buy a separate pack for each person you need name labels for, you could try one of the following workarounds:

  • Use a surname only so you can share a pack between members of your family
  • Use initials and a surname if your children (or relatives) share an initial
  • Enter two first names onto the top line (e.g. “Name 1 & Name 2”) and the surname on the bottom line
  • Enter two names (one on each line) and cut your labels in half
  • Enter both first names or initials along with the surname and cut off one of them as needed (e.g. request “Name 1 Surname Name 2” on one line and cut off one of the names)
  • Request blank labels or a blank line so you can write in the name or information you need with a suitable pen (e.g. a laundry pen)

Blank Line(s): to request blank labels or a blank line, simply use the spacebar on your keyboard to enter a single blank space into the line(s) you would like to be left blank.
If you would like to leave a blank space at the start or end of a line that you can fill in later (e.g. Room _______), please use the spacebar to create the blank space that you need AND add a note to your order to let us know that this is what you would like to do so that we can double check your order manually to ensure that it prints correctly.

FAQ – Can I Split A Pack Between Two (Or Three Or Four Or More) Names?

Thursday, September 22nd, 2016

The Short Answer:
No; all of the labels within a single pack must be printed with the same text.

The Long(er) Answer:
No BUT you can get a bit creative with the text that you request so that you can SHARE a pack between two (or more) people.

Here are the most popular ways that our customers create packs of name labels that can be shared:

USE YOUR FAMILY SURNAME & SHARE
If you enter just your family surname, you can use your name labels for ANY member of your family, in the knowledge that any lost items will be returned to the right family (if not with the right individual).

You can choose to enter just your surname (select “Name on one line”) or you might want to combine this with a piece of contact information such as a phone number (enter your surname on one line and your phone number on the other line) or perhaps add a friendly message (e.g. “Please Return To”, “Property Of”, or “This Belongs To/The Surname Family”).

USE YOUR FAMILY SURNAME + INITIALS & SHARE
If your children share an initial, you could add this initial to help make your labels slightly more personal than adding a surname only AND to help avoid mix ups if your child shares their surname with another child in their class.

USE YOUR FAMILY SURNAME + A BLANK SPACE & SHARE
You could also choose to enter your surname on the bottom line and enter a blank space on the top line to leave yourself room to write in the name that you need a label for. This way you can decide exactly how many labels within a pack are used for each child. Make sure you use a suitable pen (for example, a laundry pen) so that whatever you write onto your labels will stay in place even after repeat trips through the washing machine.

ENTER TWO NAMES/INITIALS & CUT
There are a few ways to create individual name labels from a single pack by cutting your labels in half or by cutting off one end. For example, you could enter one full name on the top line and one full name on the bottom line and then cut your labels in two OR you could enter “name/initial 1” followed by “surname” followed by “name/initial 2” onto one line and then cut off one of the ends to create individual name labels.

ENTER ALL OF YOUR NAMES & SHARE
If you absolutely want your children’s names to be on their labels and you don’t fancy cutting your labels apart, you can always opt for the simple option of adding all of the names onto your labels. Usually, our customers will do this by adding “Name 1 or Name 2” or “Name 1 & Name 2” to the top line and the surname to the bottom line; if you need to add multiple first names (especially if some or all of them are quite long), you may need to split the first names over the two lines rather than adding them all to the top line.

FAQ – What Text Should I Put On My Name Labels?

Tuesday, August 16th, 2016

Name labels are a personalised product so it’s entirely up to you what text you request when you order BUT we do have a few handy tips to help you make sure your name labels are useful as possible.

The first thing to bear in mind is that our name labels are only made to ONE size; our Stikins ® name labels measure 30mm wide by 15mm high, while our Trons ® name transfers measure 35mm wide by 15mm high.

The size of our labels DOES NOT adjust to fit in the number of characters you have requested – instead our system will count up the number of characters you have requested and select the largest possible font size that will allow all of those characters to fit onto each label.

This means that you need to keep your text short and sweet!

Most customers choose to add a name only to their labels; you can choose to add a first name, nickname, or surname only, or you may wish to include a full name (along with middle names and/or nicknames if you so choose), or something in between (for example, an initial and a surname).

We advise that you use the default layout (2 lines) and enter the first name (or names) onto the top line and the surname onto the bottom line. If you are requesting a name with both a short first name and a short surname, are requesting one name only, or are requesting an initial and a surname, you may want to switch to the 1 line layout to increase the font size that you receive.

You may also wish to include an additional piece of information; popular examples include:

  • A piece of contact information
Most people choose to add a phone number so that they can be contacted if an item is found. Some people may choose an email address or home address BUT we would advise against this unless you have a very short email address or you choose a shortened version of your home address. We would also advise against using more than one piece of contact information.
  • Medical/allergy information
If your child has a medical condition or an allergy, adding this information to their name labels creates an additional medical alert that can be used to keep their medical equipment and/or food safe or to alert people to their condition if an emergency should arise.
  • A personalised message
For example: “Please Return To”, “Property Of”, or “This Belongs To”.
  • A year, class, or form name
This can make it easier for your child’s belongings to be returned to them quickly within the school environment.

If you want to include a name AND an additional piece of information on your name labels, we recommend adding one item to the top line and one item to the bottom line to ensure that your font remains at a clear and legible size.

We have added an Example Print Page to our website, which shows the font size created by adding different amounts of text in different ways.

FAQ – Can I Split A Pack Of Name Labels Between Two Names?

Thursday, August 11th, 2016

Unfortunately, no.
Our print system is fully automated, which means that whatever text is printed onto one label within a pack is printed onto ALL of the labels within that pack – so you cannot split a pack between different names.

HOWEVER, we are more than happy for customers to get a bit creative with the text they request, so that they WILL be able to share a pack between two or more members of their family.

In fact, we’ve even got a few pointers to get you started!

  • Enter A Surname Only
If you simply enter your surname, the labels can be shared by ALL members of your family. Customers who choose this option often like to add “Family Surname” (or “Surname Family”) to the top line and then add a contact phone number to the bottom line.
  • Enter A Surname & An Initial Only
Obviously, this only works if your children share the same initial but this is a quick and easy way to make your name labels more personal than just entering the surname only.
  • Enter A Surname Only & Request A Blank Line
As long as you use a suitable pen (such as a laundry pen) you can choose to write on your name labels; if you add a blank space to the top line and add your surname to the bottom line, you will receive a set of name labels that you can split in any way you like simply by writing in the name that you need a name label for.
  • Enter One Name On The Top Line And One Name On The Bottom Line
By entering a full name on each of the two lines, you can then cut your labels in half to create individual labels for two names. You will need to take care when cutting the labels and we recommend avoiding this option if you need to include long names (e.g. double-barrelled surnames), as this will significantly reduce the font size that is used to print your labels.
  • Enter Initials & Surname Onto One Line
If you enter the first initial (or short name) followed by a surname followed by the second initial (or short name), you can create individual labels by cutting off one of the initials (or names).
  • Enter All Of The Names & Share!
Some of our customers choose to enter both first names on the top line (e.g. “Name 1 or Name 2” or “Name 1 & Name 2”) and the surname on the bottom line, so that lost items can be returned to the right family (albeit maybe not with the right child!).

FAQ – What Information Can I Put On My Name Labels?

Wednesday, July 6th, 2016

It’s entirely up to you what text you request on your labels and there are only two conditions that you have to meet:

  1. You can ONLY request standard alphanumerical characters (including a limited number of accented characters)
  2. You can ONLY request a limited number of characters to ensure that all of your text will fit onto each name label

Our system CANNOT print images or other icons (such as emojis), so you can only request letters and numbers.
We are also able to offer a limited number of accented characters as follows;
À Á Â Ä Ã Å à á â ä â å Æ æ Ç ç Ð ð À Á Â Ä Ã Å à á â ä â å Æ æ Ç ç Ð ð Ñ ñ Ô Ö Õ Ø ò ó ô ö õ ø ß Ù Ú Û Ü ù ú û ü Ý Ÿ ý ÿ

The name labels we supply are made in one of two sizes only (Stikins ® measure 30mm x 15mm and Trons ® measure 35mm x 15mm) and our system automatically selects a font size that will allow all of the characters you have entered to fit within those dimensions – which means the more text you add, the smaller your font size will be.

For example, while our system CAN process orders with 30-35 characters on a line, it will use a VERY small font to allow all of those characters to sit on a single line. We recommend trying to keep your character count to no more than 20 characters per line.

This means that, as long as you keep things short and sweet (and sensible), you can request pretty much any text you like!
Here are some suggestions of things you might want to include, based on requests made by existing Stikins ® and Trons ® customers:

  • “Family Surname” – ideal if you want to be able to share a pack of name labels between everyone in your family.
  • Nicknames – perfect if your child (or, indeed, any relative) is ONLY known by a nickname, rather than a given name.
  • Messages – some customers like to add a personal message to their name labels, such as “This Belongs To”, “Please Return To”, or “If Lost, Return To”.
  • Contact Information – if you know that you want to label items that will be taken outside the relative safety of the school environment, adding a piece of contact information is an easy way to make it easier for someone to return something that has gone astray. We recommend using a phone number, which will fit neatly and clearly onto both of our name label products – you can opt to include an email address or a partial/shortened version of your home address but these do tend to be much longer than phone numbers, which will significantly reduce the font size that is produced.
  • School Name / Year Group – a little bit of extra information that can make it much quicker and easier for your child’s school uniform or equipment to be returned to them while in the school environment.
  • Medical / Allergy Information – adding this information allows you to use your name labels as extra medical alerts to either let other people know that your child (or relative or, indeed, yourself) has a particular condition in the event of an emergency AND can be used to make sure that medical supplies or specially prepared meals are very clearly labelled to keep them safe and secure for when they are needed.

FAQ – Do You Do These Name Labels In Size X (And Other “Sizeable” Questions)

Tuesday, March 1st, 2016

Yup, it’s an FAQ special and this week we’re rounding up all of your name label questions about size, such as:

How Big Are Your Name Labels?
Our Stikins ® name labels measure 30mm wide by 15mm high and our Trons ® name transfers measure 35mm wide by 15mm high.

Can I Request A Bigger/Smaller Size Of Name Label?
We only supply these two sizes of name label and cannot accept orders for bespoke sizes.

Why Did You Pick These Sizes For Your Name Labels?
We believe that name labels need to be capable of two completely opposite functions; when you need them they should be easy to find and read BUT when you don’t need them they should be pretty much invisible.

We find that the sizes we have chosen are large enough to make them stand out when they need to (so the labels are easy to find), to hold text that is printed in a bold clear font size (so the labels are easy to read), and fit neatly onto the items that you need to label (so the labels don’t draw attention when they aren’t needed) – whether that’s onto the wash care label of clothing, onto the side wall or beneath the tongue of shoes, or on personal items such as lunch boxes and water bottles, or phones, stationery, and equipment.

What Size Font Do You Use?
The font size depends on the amount of text you enter when you order. Our system counts up the number of characters you have entered on each line and then selects the biggest possible font size that will allow both lines to be printed within the dimensions of each name label.

How Do I Get A Bigger Font Size?
Simply take a bit of time to think about what you want to include and be as selective as possible.

Our default layout allows you to split your text over two lines; we find that this creates a solid bold font even if you choose to include an additional piece of information on your labels (for example, we receive many orders for a full name on the top line and a phone number on the bottom line).

We advise limiting yourself to TWO pieces of information and putting one piece onto each of the two lines available; adding any more will cause your font size to reduce significantly. We also recommend being selective about the additional information you add; for example, if you want to add contact information, we recommend a phone number rather than an email address/address because the latter require far more characters to be used.

On the other hand, if you know you only want to add one name (e.g. just a first name or just a surname) or you’re entering text that only requires a handful of characters, you can select the “Name on one line” option to boost the font size.

As a rough guide, we’ve put together an Example Print page showing the font sizes produced by different amounts of text.

Will My Name Labels Get Bigger If I Add More Text?
No. Some parents are used to sew-in name labels where the length of the labels can be adapted to suit the length of the name that has been requested. As mentioned above, our labels are made in a set size and it is the font size that adjusts to make your requested text fit rather than the label size.

How Big Are Your Packs Of Name Labels?
Both of our name label products are available in four pack sizes, as follows:
Stikins ® name labels: select from 30, 60, 90, or 120 name labels per pack
Trons ® name transfers: select from 35, 70, 105, or 140 name transfers per pack

What Size Envelope/Parcel Will My Order Arrive In?
The majority of our orders are despatched in C5 envelopes, which will slip safely through a letterbox without any trouble.
[Extremely large orders are despatched in a small box sent via a Signed For service to ensure they are delivered safely.]

FAQ – What’s The Difference Between Choosing One Line Or Two Lines?

Tuesday, February 16th, 2016

When visiting our website you may have noticed that our product pages offer you a few different options to choose from, including one that asks if you want your name labels printed with “Name on one line” or “Name on two lines”.

We include these two options because we know that not all of our customers will want to add the same information and some will have far less (or more) to add than others. If you select the “Name on one line” option all of your text will be printed on one line and if you select the “Name on two lines” option you can divide the text you want over two lines.

We provide you with these two options so you can include the text you want in the layout that you want – with the opportunity to boost the size of font where possible. Our system counts up the number of characters you have requested and then selects a font size that will allow all of those characters to fit within the dimensions of our name label products (Stikins ®: 30mm x 15mm / Trons ®: 35mm x 15mm) – which means that the more text you include, the smaller the font becomes.

Our default set up is “Name on two lines” because we find that this setup allows you to enter the name (or name and additional information) that you want and receive labels printed in a bold font size that is perfectly legible. For example, even if you enter a full name on the top line and a phone number on the bottom line, the font size will remain clear and legible.

However, it might be that you’re requesting labels with just a first name or surname (or even that you’re ordering labels for someone with a very short first name and surname, for example “John Doe” or “Mary Sue”), which can look rather odd if two lines are used, and will actually print out in a much larger font size if you select the “Name on one line” option.

Please note: if you choose to select the “Name on one line” option and enter a lot of characters the font size you receive will be severely reduced – possibly to the point of being very difficult to read – especially if your name is particularly long (for example, if it includes a double barrelled first name and/or surname). Our labels DO NOT EXTEND in size to accommodate the text you enter; it is the font size that reduces, so it is up to you to take care with the layout you select and the amount of text you request to get a font size that you are happy with.

To Use One Line Or Two Lines. That Is The Question – But Why Do We Ask It?

Thursday, November 26th, 2015

When you order name labels from Label Planet, we give you the option of selecting text on one line or on two lines – and a few customers have asked us why this is.

The simple answer is that it’s all down to size. Name labels are supposed to be discrete when you don’t need them and legible when you do – in other words, they should be small enough that you don’t have a label plastered across your belongings BUT the font should be large enough to make it quick and simple to identify the owner of an item.

Our system is set up to automatically select the largest possible font size for the NUMBER OF CHARACTERS you request in your order.

Therefore, if you require very few characters (e.g. a surname only or a full name where both the first name and the surname are very short), you will actually get a bigger font size by selecting one line rather than two.

When ordering labels from our site the two line option is the default selection; we find that this setting provides the best possible font size for the majority of our customers (who tend to enter a first name or surname on the top line and then a surname or phone number on the bottom line).

We recommend choosing the one line option ONLY if you are requesting very little text on your labels. If you are including full names, double barrelled names, and/or any contact information (e.g. a phone number), then we would strongly recommend splitting the information over the two lines.

If you are not sure which option is best for you, you can always take a look at our Print Examples page, which indicates the font size created by a variety of text options, or simply get in touch and we can advise on the best way to layout your text.

Mixing Up Your Ps & Qs (An FAQ Special About Fonts, Characters, & Words)

Tuesday, November 17th, 2015

If you’ve got a question about fonts, characters, and/or words, this is the blog post for you; we’ve rounded up a selection of the most frequently asked questions we receive about name labels and the text that goes on them.

FONTS
Can I choose a font?
No. All of our labels are printed in one standard font.
You can get a rough idea of what this font looks like on our Printed Examples page.

What colour font do you use?
All of our products are printed in a bold black font.
We find that this offers the best legibility against the white (or silver) background of our products.

What size font do you use?
It depends on how many characters you request.
Our system counts up the number of characters you have requested on each line and automatically selects the largest font size that will allow all of the characters on both lines to fit onto each label.

If you try to enter too many characters, a warning will appear onscreen and you will not be able to add your item to the basket. However, our system will allow quite a large number of characters to be included, so if the font size is particularly important to you, we would advise being selective with the amount of text you add to your labels.

Name labels are supposed to be discrete when they aren’t needed, which means the font size will be small as a necessity. If you want a large font size, we recommend adding only the most essential information onto your labels (and in a shortened format, where possible).

To create the best possible font size, we also recommend using the “Text on two lines” setting, which is set as the default when you begin your order. For the majority of orders, this produces a better font size than that created when you enter ALL of your text onto one line only. If you are entering a single word (for example, a surname only) or a very short full name, then you can choose the “Text on one line” setting to produce a larger font.

CHARACTERS
What characters can I request on my labels?
We can print all of the standard alphanumerical characters (A-Z and 0-9), along with standard punctuation marks, and some accented characters.

Can I include accented characters in my order?
Yes and no. Our system can print SOME accented characters (within the standard European range of characters) as follows:

À Á Â Ä Ã Å Æ à á â ä â å æ È É Ê Ë è é ê ë Í Î Ï ì í î ï Ô Ö Õ ò ó ô ö õ Ù Ú Û Ü ù ú û ü Ç ç Ñ ñ Ý Ÿ ý ÿ Ø ø Ð ð ß ƒ

Can I add pictures / emoticons / emojis?
No. Our system can only print standard characters, which means that we are unable to print any kind of image onto our products at this time. Of course, if you’re feeling a bit nostalgic or creative, you can always use standard punctuation marks to add a fun twist to your labels ^__^

WORDS
What information should I put on my name labels?
It’s generally a matter of personal preference. The majority of our customers will order name labels with just a name printed on each one; most of our labels are used to label school uniform and equipment, which means that a name is usually enough to ensure that items can be returned to their rightful owner by the school.

However, we also find that customers often choose to add an extra detail to go along with the name, with the most common choices being:
CONTACT INFORMATION: usually a phone number, although some customers have requested an address or email address. While phone numbers fit quite neatly onto our name labels, we would advise that customers avoid adding an address or email address unless it is a shortened version due to the small font size produced by including so many characters.

A MESSAGE: for example, “Property Of” or “Please Return To”; we find that this is commonly used by groups (such as schools, activity groups, or departments in businesses and organisations) to keep track of equipment that is shared or loaned out, although some parents like to include a friendly message on their children’s items too!

ALLERGY OR MEDICAL INFORMATION: name labels are an easy way to add a medical alert to clothing or to containers holding food or medical supplies. In the event of an emergency, people who step in to help can quickly and easily find out that a person has a particular condition and can adjust the help that they provide accordingly.

SCHOOL OR CLASS NAME: some parents choose to include their child’s school or class name. A class name can help make it easier for the school to return items, while adding a school name can make it easier for items to be returned if they are lost elsewhere. Where name labels are purchased by businesses or organisations, they may choose to include a department to help ensure that equipment is returned to the correct place within a larger complex.

We would advise that you include TWO pieces of information (e.g. a name and a piece of contact information) AT MOST to keep the font size legible.

Can I include a full name / nicknames / surname only?
The way you format a name is down to personal preference. While most people will include a first name and a surname only, some like to include middle names as well, others will add a nickname (which is especially useful if someone is known only by a nickname), and some choose to simply use a surname (which is a great way to share labels between family members but should be avoided if you know that your child shares their surname with another child in their class).

Can I include the names of two or more people on my labels?
Yes! While we cannot split a pack between different names (every label within a pack must be printed with the same text), we are more than happy for parents to get creative with their text to allow them to buy one pack that they can use for multiple family members. For example, you might choose to:
– Use a surname only (or “Family Surname”) and share labels between the whole family.
