Happy Middle Name Pride Day!

Friday, March 10th, 2017

You might not know it but today is “Middle Name Pride Day” – a day for taking all of those middle names that are usually hidden away on forms and official bits of paperwork and bringing them out into the daylight for a big old celebration!

Middle names are often used for “special” names, for example, to honour family members and relatives, to celebrate important things in a family’s life (such as important places, months, or ideals), or simply to have some fun with a slightly “out there” name – that can be used or hidden away depending on whether or not the child finds the name exceptionally good or exceptionally embarrassing later in life.

For most people, their middle name is actually a big part of what makes them “unique” – while you might share your first name with a lot of people, the combination of your first name and middle name can feel much more uniquely “you”.

So, we’ve taken a look at our past orders to have a bit of an investigation into the middle names chosen by our customers…

For girls, the runaway success has to be “Rose”, which was our most popular middle name by far – followed (at a slight distance) by “May/Mae/Mai”. For boys, “J names” proved most popular, with “James” and “John” taking the two top spots.

While traditional names were the most popular choices for middle names, we also found that plenty of parents had decided to get a bit more creative with their middle names, with inspiration coming from all kinds of sources, including animals, nature, myths and legends, and a few pop culture icons as well. Some of our favourites include:

Artemis, Astrid, Belle, Blue, Bluebell, Clover, Cruz, Fox, Harper, Hunter, Star, Storm, Tinkerbell, Valentine, Xena, Wren, Zen, Zephyr, Zigi.

While we don’t get to see all of the middle names that our customers have chosen, we do get a fair amount of initials, and we found a few surprises in our order history:

  • “J” is the most popular letter by far, followed by “A”, “M”, “E”, “L”, and “R”.
  • Least popular is “U”, which had a very unfortunate year in 2016 and appeared in absolutely no orders as a middle initial, followed by “Q”, “Y”, “X”, and “V”, while “Z” proved to be our most popular “unpopular” letter.
  • Girls were most likely to have middle names starting with “R” or “M”, while boys were most likely to have “J” or “A”.
  • While “Q”, “U”, “X”, and “Y” names were all as equally (unpopular) with our customers for boys and girls, “Z” and “C” names had equal popularity.
  • The biggest gaps were between the letters “G”, “I”, and “M” (which were much more popular for girls than boys) and “D”, “H”, and “W” (which were much more popular for boys than girls).

Did You Know: we run a Fundraising Scheme for schools, PTAs, and other activity/youth groups and clubs to allow them to raise money by earning commission on sales of Stikins ® name labels. Schools and groups can earn up to 30% commission on orders of name labels, which they can then put towards any ongoing fundraising goals and projects. There’s no membership fee to pay and no ongoing costs; simply fill in our one-stop registration form to start fundraising all year round!

We’ve just given our Fundraising pages a bit of a makeover to make them even better and easier to use. To take a look and find out more, simply head on over to our Fundraising Home Page today!

We’re Celebrating WORLD WILDLIFE DAY With Baby Names That Take A Walk On The Wild Side!

Friday, March 3rd, 2017

Today is World Wildlife Day – a day dedicated to celebrating and raising awareness of the world’s wildlife. Each year, World Wildlife Day is given a theme and this year the theme is “Listen to the young voices”.

With this in mind, we thought we’d take a look at the names that we’ve printed over the last year and celebrate the young voices with names inspired by nature – (especially as the closest thing to wildlife here in our office is a rather alarming number of potted plants and Harvey the Stikins ® Dog who isn’t so much wild as extremely mild.)

For boys, the most popular wildlife-inspired names are based on five animals – Lions, Bears, Dogs, Wolves – and Doves!

While the most popular group is lion-based names (including Leo, Leon, and Lionel), the single most popular name is actually Callum – which is a Gaelic name meaning “Dove” – while the sixth most popular name is another dove-inspired name: Jonah.

Our third and fourth most popular groups are names that mean “Bear” (including “Arthur” and “Orson”) and “Dog” (represented by “Caleb” and its variant “Kaleb”), while our fifth most popular group (the wolves) has the most variations – including names as diverse as Channing, Conan, Lyall, Lycan, Rudy, and Wolfram.

For girls, inspiration comes from Sheep, Antelope, Birds, and Lions.

The first group includes both “Una” (which means “Lamb”) and the most popular wildlife-themed name “Rachel” (meaning “Ewe”). The second group includes “Tabitha”, which you might be inclined to think of as a name associated with cats although it’s actually an Aramaic name meaning “Gazelle”.

Birds are represented by the names “Paloma” meaning “Dove” and “Merle” meaning “Blackbird” (along with “Robin” and “Wren”), while the lion is represented by feminine versions of “Leo” such as “Leona” and “Leonie”.

Animals are also a popular inspiration for nicknames; amongst our customers, “Bear” and “Teddy” are the most popular animal-based nicknames for boys, while girls are most likely to have cat-inspired nicknames, such as “Cat” and “Kitty” – although we also love the “big cat” nickname chosen by one of our customers: “Tiger”.

(We’re also very fond of the nickname “Wolfie”!)

We hope you take some time this weekend to celebrate the wonderful (and sometimes weird) wildlife that we live with on our planet; whether you go big and take a trip to a zoo, garden centre, aquarium, or wildlife park to learn more about the world around us or you stay a little closer to home and just spend some time giving your pets (or your garden’s wildlife) a little extra TLC.

Remember, you can request ANY name when you buy name labels from Label Planet – whether you want to stick to a simple First Name & Surname format or you prefer to include a personal nickname – and  you can use our multipurpose Stikins ® name labels to label pretty much ANYTHING (including any walking boots and equipment you use to spend more time in the great outdoors or even labelling those all-important boxes of pet treats so there won’t be any arguments – or unfortunate mix ups!)

Fairy Tale Names With A Grimm Twist

Friday, February 24th, 2017

As today is the anniversary of the birth of Wilhelm Grimm (the younger of the two “Brothers Grimm”) and Sunday (26th February) is “Tell a Fairy Tale Day”, we thought we’d celebrate by taking a closer look at some of the baby names used by our customers that also feature in the Grimms’ Fairy Tales.

While we don’t have some of the more famous names (such as Rapunzel, Cinderella, or even a Hansel & Gretel), there are few less well known fairy tales that feature some better known names:

JOHN:
In “Faithful John”, a servant is given three warnings about terrible events that are about to happen to a woman who is due to marry his master (the king); John is told how to prevent these events from happening BUT must not tell anyone the truth about his actions or he will turn to stone.

John is the English form of a Latin form of a Greek name that is derived from a Hebrew name, meaning “God is gracious”. John has a number of variations, diminutives, and feminine forms, including Jowan, Evan, Ian, Ivan, Sean, Shane, Shaun, Shawn, Eoin, Ioan, Iwan, Iefan, Ieuan, Jack, Jake, Ianto, Jock, Jane, Janet, Janna, Jayne, Jean, Jeanette, Joan, Joanne, Johanna, and Shauna.
Among our customers, “John” is one of the top 75 names for boys.

HENRY/HARRY:
In “Lazy Henry” (sometimes “Lazy Harry”), a lazy man marries so that he can share his duties with his wife (so he won’t have to work as hard); unfortunately, his wife is just as lazy as he is and, following an argument, she accidentally destroys their last source of income (a pot of honey).

Henry and Harry are both derived from the Germanic name “Heimirich”, which means “Ruler of the home”. Another hugely popular name, there are a variety of alternative versions including Hal, Hank, Hendry, Henri, Harrie, Ettie, Etta, Hallie, Harriet, Henrietta, and Hettie.
Among our customers, “Harry” is the most popular name for boys, while Henry remains a firm favourite, sitting just outside the top 20 names for boys.

ROLAND:
“Sweetheart Roland” features an evil witch, a bad daughter, a good stepdaughter, a shepherd and a wise woman, and the titular Roland who, after a mixture of murder, mistaken identity, magical transformations, spells, and enchantments, is united with his true love for a traditional happy ending.

A popular French name with Germanic origins meaning “Renowned throughout the land”; the name Roland was made famous by a Frankish military leader under Charlemagne who became the subject of a number of (highly embellished) epic poems. Variations include Orlando, Rolando, Rolland, and Roly.
Among our customers, “Roland” only made one appearance in 2016 but we think it’s a brilliant name!

LISA:
In “Lean Lisa”, Lisa is the exact opposite of Henry and his wife; she works all day long and spends all night thinking about how she can get money to buy a cow, and ends up fighting with her husband about their future prospects (providing the lesson that is possible to work too hard as well as too little).

Lisa is actually a diminutive form of Elizabeth/Elisabeth (the meaning of this name is usually given as “God is my oath”/“pledged to God”/“oath of God”/“God is satisfaction”/“My God is bountiful”) and is one of many different variations of that name. Lisa is a popular name in a number of countries including Germany, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Italy, the Netherlands, France, Austria, and Belgium.
Among our customers, Lisa is one of the less commonly used variations of Elizabeth but remains a consistent presence in our list of baby names year after year.

ELSIE:
Unfortunately, while the Elsie of the Grimm fairy tale is given the title of “Clever Elsie”, she is actually anything but and acts as a warning that you may not know the true nature of someone until it is too late!

Like Lisa, Elsie is another diminutive form of Elizabeth and has increased rapidly in popularity over the last decade (though it may be its closeness to the name of a certain ice princess rather than its closeness to “Elizabeth” that accounts for this jump!).
Among our customers, Elsie is much more popular than she is in her fairy tale, being one of the top 80 names for girls.

We hope you have a fabulous weekend with a happy ever after ending to your half term break.

If you have the “grimm” nightmare of finding that your children have “misplaced” some of their school uniform or equipment before or over the holidays, remember, you don’t need to wait for a fairy godmother to arrive! Simply order some of our multipurpose Stikins ® name labels to get all their stuff quickly and securely labelled – and watch in amazement as these wonderfully labels simply stick on and stay on as if by magic!

Don’t Lose Out To The Lost Property Box Of Doom; Use Stikins ® To Keep Your Children’s Stuff Safe!

Monday, January 9th, 2017

While we can’t do anything to help with cases of the back to school blues, we can help make sure that your children’s belongings make it safely to school and back again, day after day, throughout the rest of the school year.

Stikins ® are a brilliantly simple solution to the problem of lost property and can be used to label school uniform, equipment, and all those essential extras that your children absolutely have to have with them. These labels simply peel off their backing sheet and then stick on and stay on; they can be applied onto the wash-care label of clothing and fabric items, or directly onto personal items, such as books and bags, stationery and equipment, tablets and phones, or coats and shoes (in shoes, stick them beneath the tongue or onto the side wall – NOT beneath the heel).

Our labels measure 30mm wide by 15mm high and are plain white labels printed with a bold, black font; this means that our name labels are totally discrete when they aren’t needed but are really easy to find and read when they are needed – so if your children’s belongings do get mixed up with someone else’s or go missing and turn up in the Lost Property Box, it’s extremely easy to identify them and bring them home (and you don’t have to abandon items on the Lost Property Heap simply because your child point blank refuses to take something home because there’s no way to prove that it doesn’t actually belong to someone else).

Stikins ® take seconds to apply and give you an easy way to safely and securely label ALL of your children’s belongings (although, as a fair warning, they’re not great on socks). We offer four pack sizes (30, 60, 90, or 120 labels) and you can order anytime via our website or you can give our Customer Service Team a call to order over the phone.

If you have any questions about our Stikins ®, please visit our dedicated Information Page or get in touch with our Customer Service Team. Give us a call to place an order over the phone or visit our Stikins ® product page to place an order online today.

Remember, Remember The 5th November…Is An Excellent Time To Buy Name Labels For Winter!

Saturday, November 5th, 2016

If you’ve made big plans this Bonfire Night we hope you have a marvellous time; whether you’re planning to build a splendid bonfire, watch a spectacular fireworks display, or simply have some fairground fun and food, we hope that you have a brilliant evening (and we’ve got everything crossed for good weather!).

Of course, we’d also like to point out that this is an excellent time of year to make an order of name labels for all those winter-related jobs that need doing. For example, if you’ve already dragged your winter wardrobe out from the back of your cupboard/wardrobe/attic/alternative storage space, you may well have a whole heap of winter warmers to get safely and securely labelled so they don’t go missing when you and your family need them most. From woolly hats and snuggly scarves to big, BIG coats and colourful mittens – winter means keeping track of a lot of accessories, which need to be put on, taken off, put on, taken off and it’s all too easy for something to get put down and left behind (for adults as well as children!).

You may also be planning to chase after some winter sun or have plans to spend your Christmas in a winter wonderland, on a warm sandy beach, or at home with friends and family, which means you might want to order some extra name labels to get all your holiday stuff safely labelled before you go (so you don’t end the year with someone losing their favourite jumper, cuddly toy, or other holiday essentials).

Name labels are also an ideal tool for dealing with (some of) the chaos that goes hand in hand with Christmas. Perhaps you’re looking at a crazy couple of weeks filled with event after event after event (after event), with school trips, residential trips, Christmas concerts, and Nativity performances – each of which will come with its own list of required “essentials” that need to be carted to and from (and around) different venues (usually in amongst a whole heap of identical or very, very similar belongings). Adding a name label is a quick and easy way to help make sure that your children can keep track of their stuff throughout the holiday season.

Our Stikins ® name labels are an easy to use multipurpose name label solution that can be used to quickly and securely label all kinds of items, including clothing and personal items. Each name label measures 30mm wide by 15mm high and is a plain white label printed with a bold black font to make sure that the information on the label is extremely easy to find and read when needed. They have been successfully tested by an independent laboratory using the BS EN ISO6330 wash test procedure for 30 washes at 40 degrees, and can be used to label any items that will be put through a washing machine, tumble drier, dishwasher, or microwave. With clothing and fabric items they must be applied onto the wash-care label to ensure that they stick properly, while they can be applied directly onto other personal items (if you use them to label shoes, you should apply them under the tongue or onto the side wall and NOT directly under the heel).

We make and despatch name labels EVERY DAY (Monday to Friday), with all orders we receive by 3pm being posted out same day by Royal Mail’s first class service – so you can make your order, receive your name labels, and get your stuff labelled quickly and easily, and then get on with the more fun things in life!

To get organised this winter, simply head on over to our Stikins ® product page to start placing an online order today!

Enjoy Peace Of Mind This Summer With Fantastically Flexible Name Labels From Label Planet

Thursday, July 14th, 2016

While you might be thinking that name labels are a “Back To School” purchase to be made at some point later in the summer holidays, we like to think that our name labels can be quite the little helper when it comes to making the most of your summer break.

Whatever you’ve got planned, it’s more than likely that a large part of your summer will be spent herding your children and various belongings around a variety of locations in the hopes of ending the break with as many items as you started (or, at the very least, without finding that you’ve ended up with fewer items than you started out with).

Name labels are a quick and easy way to bring some extra peace of mind to your trips, by making it a whole lot easier for items to be returned should the worst happen. Our Trons ® name transfers fuse and bond with fabric items to create a completely permanent name label, while our Stikins ® name labels will simply stick in and stay in, whether you apply them to clothing and towels (where you should apply your labels onto the wash-care label) or onto all those extras that you simply have to take with you, from buckets and spades, camping gear and swimming stuff, and, of course, all of those assorted “tools of distraction” that you might need to earn a few moments of peace and quiet.

If you’re ordering labels to help keep things safe on a family trip, you might want to order a pack (or packs) that you can share among family members; we have many customers who choose to enter “Family Surname” or simply “Surname” on one line along with a piece of contact information (such as a phone number) to help keep their possessions safe.

You can find out more about our name labels by visiting our Stikins ® Information and Trons ® Information pages, take a read through the reviews left by existing customers on our Stikins ® and Trons ® product pages for more ideas on how you can use your name labels, or simply go ahead and take the plunge by placing an order for your very own set of summer labels to keep your stuff safe through to September (and beyond!).

Stikins ® – Easy To Use Name Labels For The Whole Family

Tuesday, July 12th, 2016

While you might think that name labels are just for making sure that your children’s belongings make it safely back home from school, our versatile stick on name labels are perfect for EVERY member of your family – from the youngest to the eldest – and can be used to make sure that almost any item is safely and securely labelled.

Name Labels For Children
Stikins ® were designed to withstand the rough and tumble of the school year and to be as simple as possible to apply and use; the bold black font means it is really easy to read the name (or information) on each label so your child can easily find (and keep hold of) their belongings in the chaos of the school classroom (and changing room and playground).

These multipurpose name labels can be used to label all kinds of things, from clothing and fabric items (where they should be applied onto the wash-care label), bags and shoes (apply them beneath the tongue or onto the side wall of shoes), and onto personal belongings, such as lunch boxes and water bottles, books and stationery, or even phones and tablets. The labels are discrete enough that they won’t be plastered all over their belongings and smooth enough that they won’t cause any irritation against their skin when applied into clothing – which means your children are free to get on with their day!

Name labels are an easy way to make your children’s belongings that extra bit secure and can also help to teach your children about being responsible for their possessions, help younger children recognise and identify their own name, and can also be used as extra medical alerts if your children have any medical conditions or allergies.

They’re also a pretty useful tool if your children have a lot of similar (if not identical) belongings; sticking a name label onto these items is an instant way to put an end to arguments and tantrums about which item belongs to which child.

Name Labels For Parents
Our name labels were designed with busy parents in mind, which means that we’ve tried to make them as quick and easy to use as possible. These multipurpose name labels simply peel off their backing sheet and can be applied onto the wash-care label of clothing and fabric items or directly onto all sorts of personal belongings – this means that these name labels take only a moment of your time to apply and will safely and securely label pretty much all of your children’s belongings so you don’t end up having to buy replacements time and time again.

BUT they’re also a pretty useful tool if you want to get organised yourself or if you’re trying to keep your stuff safe at work or on trips away. For example, if you work in a busy shared environment and share equipment with colleagues – or if you use equipment that is identical to that used by your colleagues – name labels are an easy way to get your tools labelled to avoid problems with items getting mixed up or misplaced (or, indeed, to avoid issues with colleagues helping themselves to anything in the communal fridge).

They’re also useful for labelling up personal belongings and any specialist equipment that you have for holidays or hobbies; you can add your name and phone number to help make sure that any items you take with you on trips or holidays is easily returned to you should anything go missing.

Name Labels For Grandparents
Stikins ® are a great helping hand if you have a relative who is moving or has moved into residential care or a nursing home. Moving into a care home can be a stressful event for both the individual being moved and for the relatives and friends around them, and the process can often be an abrupt one. Name labels can help to ease this process by removing the worry of making sure that your relative’s belongings stay safe.

For example, care homes tend to use shared laundry facilities and it can be difficult and/or time consuming for staff to ensure that items are returned to the correct owner; labelling your relative’s clothing (and other fabric items) makes it quick and simple for members of staff for sort and return these items and so prevent the unnecessary stress caused by mix ups or items going missing. They’re also useful for bringing some extra piece of mind (and security) if your relative is taking certain items with them that are of significant emotional value, such as photo albums, books, trinkets, and ornaments.

To find out more about these brilliantly useful labels, you can take a look at our Stikins ® Information Page or read independent reviews from customers who are already using these labels; alternatively you can simply place an order and find out for yourself how useful these labels can be!

Get Ready For Some Fun In The Sun (Or Dodging The Rainclouds) With Name Labels From Label Planet

Tuesday, June 28th, 2016

Families across the country will be planning some Big Days Out to make the most of the summer holidays and that means getting your kids AND their stuff out and about and back again – hopefully without losing anything on the way.

Whether you’re heading out for an afternoon picnic, a Grand Day Out somewhere, or off on holiday, making sure that all of your children’s belongings stay with them the whole time can turn into a big worry. Adding a name label to those items is a quick and easy way to give yourself peace of mind, so that – if the worst should happen – those items are easy to return.

Our name labels are made with a white (or silver) background and bold black font so they’re really easy to find and read if an item gets lost. Our Stikins ® name labels can be stuck onto all kinds of items, including clothing, shoes and bags, and personal belongings, while our Trons ® name transfers are an iron-on product that creates a completely permanent name label on any fabric item. Both of our name label products have been tested against exposure to market leading sun creams and lotions to ensure that the print remains intact and completely legible even if your labels are exposed to these creams and lotions (or even if they simply end up being handled by sweaty hands or rubbing against sweaty feet).

We advise that you apply your Stikins ® onto the wash-care label of garments and fabric items to ensure that they remain firmly in place, while they should be applied under the tongue or on the side wall of shoes to protect the print against the friction generated underfoot as your child moves around.

You can add basic information (such as a name) to your belongings or you can opt to add a piece of contact information (such as a phone number) so that you can be contacted directly if those belongings are found.

Our name labels can survive repeat trips through the washing machine, tumble-drier, microwave, and dishwasher so they’re ideal for use on ANY items that you want to keep securely labelled EVEN after you’ve given them a thorough washing once they’ve made it back home (especially if your trip turns into “sunshine and showers” rather than “fun in the sun”).

Visit our information pages to find out more about our name labels or visit our product pages to read independent reviews and to buy your very own set of name labels:

Got A School Trip Coming Up? Label EVERYTHING To Help Make Sure It All Comes Home!

Thursday, April 21st, 2016

While for some the last term of the school year signals the arrival of exams, for others it’s a time to look forward to educational outings and residential trips, which means that parents will be looking to make sure that their child both takes AND brings back with them a whole list of essential (and not so essential) items.

Schools trips often involve shepherding large groups of students around unfamiliar (and possibly very busy and/or cramped) places, usually at top speed – which means that there are plenty of opportunities for things to be put down and forgotten or accidentally dropped.

Name labels are a quick and easy way to help make it easier for lost items to make their way home from all kinds of outings and trips; if you know that you will be using your name labels for belongings that are going to be taken here, there, and everywhere, we recommend adding a piece of contact information so that your items can be returned if they get lost in a public place – alternatively, if you know that your child will be staying at a single venue and it is likely that Lost Property will be forwarded directly to the school, then their name is likely to be fine.

At Label Planet, we have two name label products, which can come in handy for trips in the following ways:

Trons ® name transfers: iron-on transfers that can be used to create a permanent name label on any fabric item.

Our iron-on name transfers are especially useful for residential trips where your child needs to take a variety of fabric items with them, including clothing, bedding, and towels.

Stikins ® name labels: stick on name labels that can be used to label all kinds of personal items along with fabric items.

Our stick on name labels are a quick and easy solution to getting EVERYTHING labelled because they are so versatile; the advanced adhesive and flexible material mean these labels can be applied onto clothing and fabric items (where they should be applied to the wash care label) as well as any equipment and personal items that your child needs (or wants) to take with them.

Visit our information pages to find out more about the two name label products we supply (Stikins ® Information / Trons ® Information) or visit our product pages to place an order (Buy Stikins ® / Buy Trons ®).
